Washington reservations....help!!
Hi
Cannot deciede between St. Regis, JW Marriott. I am trying to find a nice hotel with a good location and on a trip advisor neither of these did well but I need to use my points someone please help! Are they as bad as TA says? Thanks |
I have never stayed at the JW Marriott-but I can tell you that the area surrounding it is really nice, clean and convenient. I stayed right next to it a week ago-there are some nice places to eat really close-Old Ebbitt Grill and the Corner Bakery and it's fun to step out and see the Capitol and walk around the White House. I liked this area a lot!

I'm a bit surprised that Trip advisor gave the JW some bad reviews.
Hotels are generally not known for great food but the JW is basically Marriott's top hotel in DC. It's in a very good and safe location. You don't mention what hotels that you've gotten good reviews on though. |
Both are nice hotels but I think JW has a better location. As lauralee mentions, there are some very good restaurants/cafes in the immediate vicinity. Plus the White House is 2 blocks away and you can walk right down 14th St to see the Washington Monument, Holocaust Museum etc. The nearest metro is Metro Center which is 1 block away. Also, the rooms were remodeled about 3 years ago and should still be in great shape.
The St Regis is more of a luxury hotel than JW, which is convention oriented. There is the Capital Hilton across the street, Olives across the street and the White House is 4 blocks away. |
Have stayed at the JW and it was fine. Your basic mid range business high rise hotel. Nothing great - but nothing wrong with it - and in a good location. I wouldn;t hesitate to stay there for free.

They are both good hotels in good safe locations. you won't go wrong with either. JW is in a slightly more touristy area; St. Regis a bit more business oriented.

Wow, thanks for the input. SOme of the top hotels were:
Hay Adams Sofiel Lafayette Square Topaz Hotel The Fairmont abd of course the Ritz and the Four Seasons I think I will be stayin at the Marriott, I want a clean hotel good bed but a great location! I heard there is a new Westin Grand but it is quite aways away. I have also thought Four Points SHeraton was a good choice, but again never stayed there either. I still love more suggestions, thanks! |
With trip advisor you need to look at the AVERAGE rating. In the case of the JW Marriott, the average is 4 out of a possible 5.
Even the best hotels in the world always have a few awful reviews on Trip Advisor. These are usually posted by trolls because it gets attention by standing out against all the glowing reviews. Search JW Marriott here on this board and you'll see most people here love the JW Marriott. The top TA hotels you you listed vary widely in price. But all are great in their own category. The Hay Adams is about $500/night, Topez is about $200. If I was spending my own money, I would choose Topez. The Sofitel is also very nice and the most convenient in that list - right next to both Metro and the White House. |
Thanks bardo1
You are right I should not be so paranoid when it comes to the rooms. I am trying to get into the JW but it is pretty full. I tried to get into the Sofitel but the price went from 159.00 to 350.00 in 1 week, so bummed. Thanks again! Any place I should make sure to eat at? |
I assume you're trying to use Marriott points?
I can also recommend Topaz hotel or the Tabard Inn (next door). The Tabard Inn has 40 rooms - each unique and priced individually. Unlike most hotels, the Tabard Inn room prices don't change based on supply/demand. www.tabardinn.com I can recommend some restaurants if I know your dining budget and which hotel you'll be at. |
