We (my spouse, myself & our two border-collies) were planning to take our RV which does not have AC through John Day, OR to Baker City, OR to Half Way, OR then to the ghost-town of Conucopia, OR thinking it would be a great place to boon-dock on a friend's property there and hike with the dogs off-leash.

Now, I'm concerned that it will be too hot for us cool-weather types.

Any ideas / input for us? We live in Bend, OR and will have 8 days!

What month are you planning on?

If it's not too hot for you in Bend, it probably won't be too hot for you in John Day or Baker City. On the average John Day and Baker City are only two degrees warmer than Bend. Risk the heat. Your trip sounds like fun.

We're going mid-August.

In Bend, we have AC in the house and drive vehicles with AC. We planned the trip two months ago when the reality of 95 with out air conditioning didn't register.

Normally we go to the Coast for these reasons but this year we wanted something "different". We could leave the RV and take a SUV with AC but then we're really tied down because the dogs.

FWIW, we just got back from backpacking past John Day this weekend. So obviously no a/c;) Even with the high temps this weekend, it was fine, and we are from the wet side of the state, so don't deal with heat as well as you do. I say go for it! We took our dog and she had a blast, as did many others that we saw on the trails.

I live 50 miles south of Bend. It was 101* for a couple hours this afternoon. Why not go west and south past Mt. Bachelor on the Cascade Lakes highway to Elk Lake, Lava Lake or Crane Prairie Reservoir.
I have some new friends that are staying at the Quinn River Campground on the west side of Crane Prairie.
If you want to find a cooler place in NE Oregon, try the Blue Mts. or the Wallowas.
There are a couple of places to let the dogs run in the Waldo Lake area. I like the hike out to Bobby Lake east of the Waldo Lake road.
