Try the Four Seasons if you want to splurge - lovely public rooms, some rooms on the canal have small balconies. They may have weekend rates. The St. James Suites on 24th (23?) street are usually a good bargain - one bedroom suites with separate living room. They have weekend rates. Also have underground self parking and its usually pretty easy to drive around D.C. on the weekend. They are also just a block from the Foggy Bottom subway stop and an easy walk to Georgetown and the area around the White House.
Restaurants: DC Coast on 14th St for wonderful Chinese Lobster; have an appetizer of fresh oysters served on a bed of frozen vodka slush with pickled ginger that is out of this world.

depends what you like---the museums are great--the hirshhorn and the national gallery, especially----there is much history---mt. vernon, bull run, etc. a white house tour might be fun--don't know how difficult that is on the weekend. as for hotels, the 4 seasons is great, as is the willard or the hay adams--cheaper rate hotels could be found by looking at the NY times in the travel section on sunday

Kate,
When we go into DC from the north, we like to cut across to the Virginia side and drive down the Geo. Washington Memorial Parkway.

I remember Mrs Kal's reaction on her first trip when she got a quick peek at the Washington Monument between a small opening in the luscious greenery along the route!

We love staying either at the downtown DC Metro Marriott or in Arlington (Roslyn) at the Key Bridge Marriott.

The Key Bridge has a Metro stop about 2 blocks away while the Metro Marriott has a Metro stop in it's basement.
The Key Bridge is also just across the river from Georgetown. Walking distance to M & Wisconsin Sts. Good restaurants and shopping there.

Great city. Bad Rap.
Mahalo,
Kal
