I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned going to see The Awakening statue (http://www.pankin.com/pleasure/hains.htm) - kids absolutely love it (so do many adults). I recommend doing the FDR/Korean/Lincoln/Vietnam at night to save daylight time and because they are all quiet enjoyable at night as well as during the day. The White House is not open for public tours but the White House Visitors Center is. The visitors center is basically just one large room with some displays in it but is interesting on its own.

You have kids so I'll point out the better (sic: cleaner) bathrooms in the mall area (!): The WH Visitors Center, any museum, Lincoln Memorial, FDR, Jefferson Memorial.
