Washington DC Traffic & Parking

Is traffic any different on weekends vs weekdays in DC? We are arriving on a Saturday (in Oct) and would like to drive ourselves out to the Jefferson Memorial & the Lincoln Memorial doing our own little night tour on that evening. There are 3 of us, my dad included who is 76 yrs old and while he is very active I'm worried about the distances of these Memorials to other places in DC. What if any parking will we be able to find on a weekend evening? If no parking is availabe to do it ourselves we have considered one of the night tours but we are staying near Barrack's Row and don't want to take the Metro back at 11:00 p.m. Is there parking readily available at Union Station (Trolley Tours) or at The Old Post Office (Washington DC Tours)?

Thank you

Union Station has a parking garage. The Old Post Office Pavilion probably has parking garages nearby but they might be closed when you get done. You can check www.bestparking.com for more info.

You might find street parking by the Memorials and you might not. You can take a taxi also.

At NIGHT? You may very well find parking along Constitution Avenue or as mentioned, you could take a taxi.

Thank you for such quick responses. Yes, this is just to see them at night. We will still visit them during the day, taking taxi's as needed, but would like to see them lit up.

WADR to vjpblovesitaly...You WILL find street parking by the Memorials at night. This is a cake walk - I do this frequently for out of town visitors (so often that I now tend to stay in the car). Park at Jefferson Mem., park at FDR, park at MLK, park on Const. Ave. between 22nd& 21st (for Lincoln and Vietnam vets Memorials), then park at Const. Ave. between 18th & 17th (for WWII Memorial). Drive "home" via Const. Ave. to Barracks Row area.

But the parking is not necessarily close. THere is no parking right at either memorial, but instead requires some walk.

If your dad has trouble walking you could drop him near the memorial, go and park the car and then join him.

We've done it at night - walking - and it was great fun - but everyone was a strong walker - since it is a couple of miles to cover all of them.

Thank y'all so much. I do understand there will still be walking involved. My dad while being 76 yrs old is very active but has a tendency to have sciatica problems with allot of walking. We are staying 4 blocks from a Metro stop and after a long day of sightseeing we didn't necessarily want to finish off his day with a HOHO bus tour, a Metro ride, and then a walk back to the condo all at 11:00p. which is why we were hoping to do it ourselves.
