If you will be there for a while, and trying different things, I will add the suggestion of the Tabard Inn. It's the only restaurant I've been to in D.C., though, but it is one of the oldest, and it is quite atmospheric in the dusty jazzy kind of way. I thought the food was delicious, but it might be variable.
