1789 is fabulous, and the perfect spot for an anniversary dinner.

I would catch a cab to 1789. It's in a residential neighborhood so it may be harder to find if you don't know where you're going. Also, it's not exactly a place where you'd wear walking shoes!

My parents treated us to my med school graduation dinner at 1789 in May 1971: it was "memorable"!

If you do 1789, make sure you ask for a table downstairs (much cozier down there, fireplace, etc.) It's a wonderful restaurant, and especially if you're celebrating your anniversary, it's nice to go somewhere you know will be around forever so you can go back for another anniversary celebration!

By the way, it's sort of at the far end of G'Town from Dupont, so I would not suggest walking there, esp. in November and you're likely to be dressed up for dinner.

For pre-theater, I agree that 701 is an excellent choice. If you like Mexican, Red Sage is also close by and very good. (it's casual upstairs and fancy downstairs, diff't menus for each). Ceiba is also quite good.

For other anniversary spots, you may want to look into some of these:
Laboratorio at Galileo (amazing experience, you sit in the kitchen while the chef prepares an incredible tasting menu for you and about 8 other tables)
Obelisk is also a great place
Maestro at the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons (you would need a car - but this place is unbelievable)
2941 in Falls Church (again, you'd probably need a car)
Taberna del Alabardero (wonderful, elegant Spanish restaurant)
Michel Richard Citronelle (in G'Town, world famous chef, one of DC's best restaurants - altho the service has been known to be snooty)

I'd suggest Galileo's. It's amazing - the food is wonderful, service is fabulous. I went for an anniversary, and it was perfect.

I agree with others that 701 is a good choice -- it's classy and consistent.

I'd add one more to the list you've been provided by others: Butterfield 9
(it's on 14th between F and G). Just a couple blocks from the Warner. Very classy, very good food.
