Washington DC Question
 

Hello,

I will be flying in to Washington DC from San Francisco.

I plan to arrive in Washington DC on a Sunday morning.

I need to drive to Charlottesville on Sunday, in order to get to a 8am meeting at the University of Virginia on Monday.

Can you please tell me:

a) Which is the best aiport to fly into, whether Dulles or National, so that I can drive from there to Charlottesville

b) Any reasonable priced accomodation (e.g. quality inn, hampton inn) in Charlottesville near the University of Virginia Darden School?.

Dulles is your best choice both because it will be easier to get the road to Charlottesville and because you can get a non-stop from SF. Can't help with the lodging but Charlottesvill isn't that big.

Also, if you repost with a title something like "Seeking hotel in Charlottesville" you will probably get more responses to this part of your question.

There is a Residence Inn within 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile of the Darden Business School: 1111 Millmont Street. If that doesn't work out, check for the other chain types of the caliber you mentioned on Barracks Road which is also very near by.

Actually, it's easier to get on the road from National.

I'll have to agree with RuthMc. Dulles Airport is your best choice (vs. National) if you were going to Charlottesville.

From Dulles, the best route is to take 28 south to I-66 West. Exit at 29 (south or west can't tell on the map because it is diagonal) stay on 29 until you get your destination. It should be around 100 mile trip.


You probably bought your tickets already, however if you did not, I recommend flying to Richmond. Charlottesville is much closer to Richmond (~70 miles) and straight shot on I-64 so you don?t have to take non-interstate routes. Richmond?s airport is smaller of course but nice. If you can find a cheap flight to Richmond then I recommend it.


One more advice for you: Avoid Northern Virginia rush hours as much as possible. Traffic can really be nasty here. Even worse that SF.

Check the rates for the Omni in Charlottesville. It's not a discount hotel by any means but sometimes they offer specials. (My brother-in-law attended Darden.) Also, check with the university. The biz school may have special rates already set up with local hotels.
