Washington DC Neighborhoods
 

A family member (young woman in her 20's) will be in DC in November for a conference and I'd appreciate recommendations about neighborhoods for her hotel. The conference is at the Marriott Wardman Park and she'll be using Marriott points (so we need a Marriott/Sheraton hotel). I thought that Georgetown might be a more interesting location for her in terms of restaurants, etc. and she could walk/metro to the hotel from there. Any thoughts?

The Marriott Wardman Park is in a great neighborhood. Before I got to the part of using points I was going to suggest the Woodley Park Guest House that is at the bottom of the Marriott driveway. There are many great restaurants in that neighborhood and a metro stop that can take her anywhere. The metro does not go to Georgetown so she would have to use a cab or Uber to her conference every day if she stayed in Georgetown. That can get expensive and my experience with Uber in DC was not the best.

First, I agree the Marriott Wardman Park would be perfect - one metro stops from DuPont circle, two to downtown, walking distance to Adams-Morgan, etc. Second, there is no metro in Georgetown, so it's a particularly worse location for her.

There is a "Georgetown" Marriott, but it's actually in the West End. The only problem is that it's a longish walk to either Dupont Circle or Foggy Bottom metro station. There's a Residence Inn that's much closer to the Dupont Circle Metro and also a Courtyard that's about halfway between Dupont Circle and Woodley Park metros (that's another longish walk). The Residence Inn might be the better choice.

There isn't any Marriott in Georgetown. I think she should stay where the conference is, the only reason is that you think Georgetown would be "more interesting?" ha, it isn't. And the one that calls itself Georgetown but isn't in Georgetown is in a more big business area anyway and not close to a metro stop and about 2 miles away from the Wardman, that's quite a walk. There are various good restaurants in Woodley Park near that hotel.

I agree with Doug, the only reasonable alternative is the Residence Inn near Dupont Circle. At last she could take metro, that's still over a mile walk to the Wardman.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think the Residence Inn at Dupont Circle might be a good option for her to consider, along with the conference Marriott.

Another wholehearted vote for the Woodley Park location, i.e., the Marriott Wardman Park. Accommodation alternatives include the Woodley Park Guest House and the Kalorama Guest House.

Adding to what others have noted -- llots of restaurants, easy access to the metro, a bit quieter than Dupont Circle, and closer to her conference.

She might be interested to know that the Marriott Wardman Park is near the zoo. Pandas!!

First choice wold be the conference hotel. Next the Residence Inn Dupont Circle on P Street. Next The Mayflower just a few blocks below Dupont Circle. There's also a Courtyard Embassy Row on Rhode Island and 16th, an easy walk to Dupont Circle.
