Washington DC/Monticello

We are looking at a trip to Monticello and are flying into Washington DC. We are looking to stay about half way in between these places - does anyone have any suggestions of a good location? We really appreciate any help.

Washington DC to Charlottesville is only 115 miles. Or about 100, if you're flying into Dulles. Halfway basically means Culpepper, 45 miles from Charlottesville.

There are a few motels in Culpeper - Super 8, Comfort Inn, Red Carpet Inn, etc. Or there may be some country-inns/B&B, though I have no information.

If your trip is just to Monticello, then it makes more sense just to stay in Charlottesville.

If you plan to visit both Monticello and DC, then it makes more sense to split your hotels and stay in both places.

Except for some small towns (such as Culpeper), there is not much in between the two other than farmland or National Forests (did you want to camp or mouintain climb?) and nothing to warrent a stay for a vacationer.

We did both Washington DC and Monticello on our trip last year and we stayed three nights in Alexandria VA and then left to spend one night in Charlottesville (and visiting Monticello) before returning home. I think this worked out well for us.

By the way, the Plantation Community
Tour at Monticello (available April - October) is highly recommended!

The 2 hours trip from DC to Charlottesville via Rt. 66/29 is easy from Dulles - you cut out a lot of commuter traffic. If you start from DC, you must contend with major traffic on 66. Many hotels/motels on 29 in Charlottesville. Too much to do as a day trip. Mount Vernon is similar, but different, if you want to stay in the DC area only.
