Washington DC metrorail - Shady Grove to DC??

We usually take Route 270 from Frederick, Maryland to 495 to the George Washington Parkway, then in to the city to begin the hunt for a parking spot.

On our next visit to DC we're thinking about taking the metrorail (red line) from Shady Grove (25 miles below Frederick) into the city. I have searched online and discovered that I can buy a one day pass for $6.50, and that parking is $4.00/day (over 5000 spots), and it takes 44 minutes to travel 18.52 miles to L'Enfant Plaza, and trains start running after 7:00 am on Saturday (when we're travelling). However.....

1. How often do the trains run? How long will I have to wait for the "next train"?

2. Has anyone used the Shady Grove parking area, and can you suggest the best section to park the car?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Peace.

Robyn,

On Saturday, the parking lot will be practically empty. On Saturdays, you can park in the "reserved" section or even park for free at the metered spots closest to the entrance. The metered spots (free on Sat.) at the west entrance are your best bet.

Thr trains will leave Shady Grove every 12 or 15 minutes depending on the time of day. Here's the weekend Metro rail schedule:

p.s. You wouldn't be asking this because you are planning to attend the Peace Rally tomorrow??

Just clarify, not just the metered spots are free on weekends - ALL Metro parking is free on weekends.

bardo1 -

Thanks for the great information and website links. Yes, we're heading down to DC for the Peace & Justice Festival. Being old hippies from the 60's-70's, we're looking forward to hearing Joan Baez perform at 3:18 pm. Peace.

It's a great weekend not to drive downtown. Many street closures ahre ahead for much of the weekend. I don't know Shady Grove well, but your plan is solid. Just give yourself a little extra time because big crowds are expected.
