Washington DC dress code

We're going to Washington in ten days. We have planned a tour of the Capitol and we're waiting to hear on the White House. That's probably not going to happen at this point. Anyway, what's the dress for sight seeing in Washington (including the Capitol and White House)? Are shorts, jeans and sneakers okay? I'm still working on our itinerary. Looking forward to the trip.

Whatever floats your boat. It's a tourist town.

If you work there, you have to wear a suit. But tourists may wear anything they want, so most of them wear comfortable footgear, usually sneakers, and their vacation clothes.

Anaonymous, I had to chuckle, as I also work here professionally (biggest client is a law firm) and almost never wear a suit, but dress professioanlly and nicely nonetheless.
The tourists here are generally about as dressed down as you can get. But we are still having some very cool nights and some days where it is gusty (or rainy) and pretty cool, so do pack the pants/jeans (and a light jacket).

Sorry, emd. I guess I mistook you for a well-dressed tourist.

Be sure to wear very comfortable shoes or sneakers. You will do an incredible amount of walking. Jeans are fine. Have a great time.
