Washington DC-Cherry Blossoms
I'm going to DC tomorrow for a few days-Can I expect to see any cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin?--or is it just too early?--Thanking anyone who replies-
The buds are opening now, peak should be around the end of the week. Some trees in the suburbs are already in bloom and have been so for awhile.
The “peak bloom” this year for the cherry blossoms is April 1 to 4 according to this web site:
http://nationalcherryblossomfestival...dex.php?id=404 And the blooming period is predicted to last through April 11. I'm going this weekend (just pure luck to be hitting cherry blossom time, we didn't plan around it) and I'm really excited to see the blossoms! |
DH and I are headed to Baltimore on Friday and plan to go into DC for the blossoms. Good to hear the peak is coming.
I can tell you that they are all in flower now. I was down there tonight with a tour group.
Many blossoms are now off the trees due to wind and rain. Peak has passed.
Tuesday would have been a great day for them. I saw them Monday, a sunny but windy day. A few blossoms were out full but some had just started a few days prior. Still quite wonderful, all around the basin and elsewhere here and there along the Mall. I didn't plan a trip to DC at all - it just happened in the middle of a road trip that took me through DC, and they happened to be open! Something I haven't seen since I was a kid.
We'll arrive on Easter Sunday for 5 days. Will there be ANY blossoms left on the trees?
We got back last night. I would think there would be some left but the peak has passed. There was a lot of wind on the evening of the 3rd and day of the 4th that took a lot of them off the trees. There will still be lots of other types of trees along the Mall and around the Capitol that bloom later than the cherry trees though. Have a great time!
There are even some late-blooming types of cherry trees. I know I saw some when we stayed at the Marriott at Wardman Park in mid-April a few years ago. They also had an absolutely amazing display of blooming bulbs all over their grounds. It's right next to the Metro stop for the Zoo.
We just got back last night. The peak is definatley over. I would get to the basin early, i.e. Jefferson Memorial so you can catch what is left. There are some but not many. I will say that the bulbs, especially the tulips, are beautiful. Especially around Arlington. Have a great time, I wanted to stay longer.
I've just looked at the live webcam and the blossoms are just about all gone. :-(
The trees at the tidal basin have lost their blossoms, but it depends upon the variety of tree, there are plenty of cherry trees out in the burbs that are in full bloom now. My own cherry tree will not come into bloom for a few weeks.
all gone. but lots of other beautiful sights in your nation's capital.
