We are traveling by car to the DC area in late June with 3 days in DC. We will then have some time at a timeshare near the Shenandoah National Forest. The last 3-4 days we are not sure what to do. Hubby would like to see Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero, I'm thinking we may have more to see in DC. We've never been in the area so don't know if we should drive to (or near) NYC or hop on a train for a day. There will be 4 of us-kids age 14 and 10. We like to visit historical sites and have also considered stopping in Gettysburg and maybe Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell. Any suggestions where to stay our last 3-4 nights and how best to travel, or where to park the car and catch public transportation? Second question-any suggestions of the best place to celebrate the 4th?

It's significantly cheaper to stay in Philadelphia than in NYC, though the prices may be high around July 4. It's certainly worth seeing what you can find. And once in Philadelphia you can do a day-trip into NYC to see the sights you want to see. NYC is certainly worth 3 or 4 (or 10) days of your time, but so are DC and Philadelphia. Just keep in mind that it's likely to be miserably hot around July 4. That might affect your decision to stay longer in DC. But regardless of where you are, the 4th is a great celebration in any of these three places.

Take the train for sure into the city. DC is no picnic for parking so you can take the train there also. Most everything in DC is free, even the zoo. So glad you are taking your kids there.

Annapolis is also a great place to visit. Best beaches in Delaware if you get hot after Annapolis.
Baseball game/ Nationals or Phillys. Stub hub for tickets.
