Take the Metro bus... it's just a few dollars.

Twenty seconds after I did an Internet search for

"dulles airport" transit

I got this URL:

www.mwaa.com/dulles/ground.htm

which should explain all your options for getting from Dulles. The Metro Center is a major stop on Washington's subway system (called "The Metro"); so, once you get to the Metro, you should have no problem getting to the Metro Center. The above URL gives several options on getting to the nearest Metro stop.

There have been recent reports that ths bus from Dulles into the city is not terribly reliable. A recent chat on the Washington Post talked about 1/2 hour waits.

There is shuttle to the Metro that, while more costly, is probably more reliable. It takes you to the West Falls Church Metro station.

MikeT...
I just took the metro bus 2 weeks ago and let me tell you why...
I planned to take the Washington Flyer @ 8.00 (a good choice) but when I went to the booth I had just missed it and would have to wait 35 minutes for the next one. The guy there told me that the only other option was cab or shuttle (jerk) and I just happened to run across the metro bus. The driver was a unhelpful jerk, which is unusual for DC. I had no idea how much it cost, or if it made other stops, etc... a nice man waiting to board helped me and I decided to jump on. MUST have exact change. The ride cost me 5.00 because I did not have exact change.
I jumped off at the first stop and got on the metro to save time. Everything worked just fine.
So, the moral of the story is... if you just missed the Flyer check to see if the Metro bus is there. If not, go back and wait for the next Flyer.
:)

Oh... PS.... the METRO was the most erratic I have seen in DC.
Been many times and never understood why locals complained until my last trip.
I spent 20-40 minutes waiting for every train.

The Metro has been having a lot of problems in the past couple of years, but I just spend 4 weeks in DC, and I seemed to have the magic touch when it came to the metro. I never waited more than 5 minutes for a train, both inside and outside rush hour. It was bizarre, but pleasant.

Actually, Ann, I use bus and subway every day an have had almost no problems either. There have been a number of problems on the Red Line because they have just added a new station and have had system breakdowns.
