I think that is such a petty thing and has no place on this board...not travel related

You could save yourself a lot of aggravation by answering "Washington state" when people ask you where you're from.

Your so lucky to be living near the Washington monuments.

do you ever see the president?

Where in WA are you? I'm in Olympia. When people ask I always say Seattle.

kevin Jun 21st, 2002 08:19 PM

wow, you must see those congress dudes every time you go out someplace.

Well, I'm thinking you're being positively ridiculous. WASHINGTON to most folks would be the Nation's Capital. Washington State is, understandably, someplace else entirely. Surely, you realize this by now. Why, oh why, would you even care if you have to clarify where you live? Whatever is the big deal???

My husband Walter and I have a similar problem. We line in Columbus, Ohio.
When people hear where we are from they always say,"Do you speaka Spanish?" or,"Does your husband sell drugs?".
I frankly tired of these responses, and besides Walter has paid his debt to society.

I understand and empathize with you. It is the same when I tell someone I'm from New York, they ask "Oh, what's it like to live in NYC?" I then explain that NY is also a state, and mostly rural, in fact anyone who hasn't travelled thru the Finger Lakes Region, or upstate NY is really missing a glorious time. Also most people you live in DC, do not use the 'Washington' at all as DC covers it.

We here in Skunkskill NY are always being asked if, being from New York, we voted for Rudy G. The only Rudy G. I know is the old fart that runs the video shop that always leers at you when you check out movies with nekkid babes in them.

A bit of a history lesson here:

When Washington State was selecting its name, the powers that be considered 'Washington' and 'Columbia' but decided on 'Washington' so as not to be confused with the District of Columbia!
