Wash D C mid October

Am planning a trip to DC for our fall break. I have twin 13 yr old boys who won't sleep in the same bed so its either Embassy Suites or 2 rooms at a less expensive hotel(under $200). Would like indoor pool and close to metro line. Any thoughts on Embassy Suites Chevy Chase vs Alexandria? Any other ideas? Some of the less expensive hotels, Hampton Convention Center, Holiday Inn Rosslyn are booked.
Also, my husband would like to see some water. Would Annapolis be a good day trip? I assume we would have to rent a car for that. Any other ideas?

BetsyG,

As a Virginian, I vote for Alexandria. The metro is close, plus Old Towne Alexandria has history, shopping, dining and is generally great for meandering. Chevy Chase is not as compact. And, the city is on the Potomac. There is easy access to great biking/walking trails along the river--Mount Vernon is 15 miles south if you're so inclined.

Annapolis would be about an hour from Alexandria, depending on traffic, and is a good day trip.

The ES at Chevy Chase is handy because it's literally on top of the Friendship Heights Metro station and attached to an upscale shopping mall with several restaurant options that would appeal to most 13-year-olds. They have some corner suites that are really huge.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like either "ES" would be good. Any other ideas? Betsy

We like the Tabard Inn www.tabardinn.com
near Dupont Circle. Last spring we had a nice 3rd floor walkup room with 3 beds. Walking distance of White house, metro stops fairly nearby.

I'll second Tabard Inn - excellent idea.

Tabard looks good but I really want a pool. Thanks anyway.

FWIW, guest at the Tabard have free use of the YMCA a 1/2 block away which has an Olympic sized pool in addition to all the other equipment.

Tabard is no doubt too funky for some, but just right for us. The breakfasts (included, last year anyway) were great, and there's a nice bar.

Try the Harrington hotel only two blocks from the Mall and the White house and tell your boys that if they wont stay in one bed they can stay at home.Paul
