I believe a light rail line was being put in between the airport and the strip a year or so ago which sounded like a great idea. Does anyone know if this is completed?

We were in Vegas two years ago for a convention. It is not somewhere I would have ever picked to visit, but my family did find it fascinating to see once. We visited several of the hotels and my husband gambled for 15 minutes or so. We did see a two shows which we really enjoyed -- "O" and Penn and Teller's magic show. Even though they are not cheap (especially "O"), we really enjoyed them. I don't think they were any more expensive located in Vegas than they would be elsewhere.

Good luck with your trip. You'll love Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon and I hope you'll find your time in Vegas interesting!

cmt: Some hotels may have shuttles to the a/p but I honestly am not sure about that, you would need to call the hotel directly and ask. We either take a cab or have a rental car. A cab is the easiest and all major hotels have them lined up waiting for you. No hotel has shuttle service between other hotels on the strip that I know of, but some off strip hotels do have shuttles to the strip(i.e. Orleans Hotel) BUT ...
There is a free tram between Treasure Island and Mirage. There is a free tram between Bellagio and Monte Carlo and there is a free tram between Mandalay Bay-Luxor-Excalibur. (incidentally, Excalibur may have rates that fit your budget, I forgot about them).

The Monorail runs behind major hotels but is really not convenient to many of them (in my opinion), plus it is not cheap.

There are also city buses that run along the strip but I honestly have never ridden one so I cannot talk about them. Personally we just like walking along the strip and taking in the sights (human and otherwise ).

Thanks for all the comments. I've decided to stay two nights instead of one, since I'll be arriving so late the first night that, acter checkinh into my hotel, I wouldn't really have time to go out and see anything if I were to fly out the next morning. I'll try to find a tour to Valley of Fire (or if possible that plus Hoover Dam) for the full day Saturday that I'll be there, and then I'll spend a few hours seeing what LV is all about that evening before flying back the next morning.
