Warning to sun worshippers - San Diego/LA weather

Watching the news the other night and seeing all of the sad tourists being interviewed I thought I'd post a little weather advisory for So. California.

Our June gloom this year is BAD!!! The stuff that usually burns off around 11 am has been lasting all day, every day - with the occassional rain thrown in just for a little variation.

Not sure how much longer I can take it - may have to go to Oregon or Washington for a sun respite! What is the world coming to?

It's been sunny and hot in Sacto these past few days but other than that it's been incredibly perfect. So much cooler than other years. Is this a trend? Cooler in s CA and cooler in N CA than usual?

Alice,

Why don't you try coming to New York.

High today (maybe) 70 - rain
Tomorrow 68 - rain
Saturday 67 - rain
Sunday 70 - rain

Give me the June gloom, it would sure beat this Sprinter we are having.

Well, it's a weak La Niña condition that's to blame for this. Stays cloudy and yucchy, but it won't just up and rain, just drizzle a bit; we're going to have another draught year, folks.

I just hold on to the hopes that July and August will be sunny and gorgeous, as they usually are. And the marine layer burns off in Long Beach (where I live) a few hours before Santa Monica (where I work), so with any luck I'll see sun this weekend at home!

Am I the only one that's enjoying the cooler weather? Don't we get enough summer?

Patty - Yes it is just you. For what I pay to live down here, there can NEVER be enough summer.

I'm delighted with the weather here in Western North Carolina... it's a lot like the weather in New York, apparently. Cool and rainy, but the lakes, creeks, rivers, and springs are back to normal and the plant life could not be happier with its station in life -- are you familiar with all those pictures of Indian or Cambodian temples strangled with vines and ever so slowly being eaten by greenery? These days I look at those pictures and I think of my back yard...

OOOPS..premature "post my replyalation".

We were in San Diego from 5-31 thru 6-4 and saw the sun maybe 2x!
It was good during the Rock and Roll marathon but bad the next 3 days while staying out on Coronado.
It did brighten up on our getaway day.
Figgers! It did make for a beautiful flight on the way home.

Alice,
Then you won't like what I heard on NPR the other day. Apparently they're saying that June gloom is getting worse each year. It's a weather trend that's not just in California and predictions are that it will stretch further into the summer months in future years.

The Palm Desert area has been warm and sunny. It was in the mid 90's when I left the office this evening. So if you get to Southern California and get tired of the June gloom, head out to the desert area for a few days.

LOVE IT! SD/California native here loves the 'gloom'. Let the tourists and transplants complain -maybe a few of them will actually leave (wishful thinking).

I too am enjoying the cooler LA weather right now. When summer lasts into October, I'll take as many cooler June days as I can get.

love

I live in Pasadena and it's been raining all day. A steady light drizzle. Normally any morning fog and drizzle would have ended by lunch.

Not to discourage visitors --- there is tons to do here and many outdoor activities could still be done in this light rain. But it's not a good beach or pool day!

Local scientists believe we are in for a cooler than normal summer overall and that in fact we are entering a long range era of cooler summers based on long term trends in ocean temperatures and the effects on local weather.

Seriously - You all are depressing me. If I don't see some sun soon I just may go a little batty.

Sightseer -
I have just decided to take my kids to Palm Desert for the weekend so as to remember what sun feels like. Got the last two rooms at Mariott Palm Desert Resort. Only problem is - I know I won't want to come back here!

Here in the sunshine state we've had between 8 and 14" of rain since Sunday depending on where in the county you are. I haven't seen the sun in 3 days and more is predicted for tomorrow. We are in a coastal flood warning and if I walk more than 10' down my front walk right now, I'll be in ankle deep water. Our roof is leaking for the first time ever and I've got two pots catching water in the living room and one more in the dining room. The cat is permanently living under the bed thanks to the thunder that has accompanied most of the rain. I think I'll head on over to England for a little relief!
