War effects

Does anyone know what effect the war will have on the Hawaiian Islands? We are going to Maui in April for 9 days and need to decide if we need to change anything. Will it cause foreign travelers and conventions to cancel? How about security measures?

Hawaii is still at the "blue" level of alert which is the second lowest level. But the cynic in me wonders if this is a misguided attempt to curtail
tourist panic and cancellations which are crushing to Hawaii's economy. Governor Lingle announced on TV this AM that "all is well" in Hawaii but there is still unease among residents.

It was my understaning that the Department of Homeland Security set an Orange terrist alert for the whole country. Why is Hawaii only on a Blue alert?
Maybe because Homeland Security doesn't know it's a state?

Vivi, please provide your source for the "blue" level. I just read the homeland security website and it definitely doesn't say anything about ANYONE being under any color except orange.

Excerpt from the front page of today's (March 18th) Honolulu Advertiser newpaper:

=====================

&quo t;While the rest of the nation has raised its terror-alert level to orange or "high risk" on the eve of a likely invasion of Iraq, Hawai'i will remain at a lower threat level, Gov. Linda Lingle said yesterday.

Lingle said state Adjutant General Robert Lee spoke with national homeland security officials and "after his conversation at this time there is no additional credible threat in the state of Hawai'i and we will maintain our alert status at the blue level."

The blue level, known as "guarded," is the second-lowest alert level."

Go to HonoluluAdvertiser.com for the whole story.

This has also been one of the top stories on the local TV newscasts for the last 24 hours.
