Want warm US destination
We want to go someplace warm in Feb,but have done Hawaii, Tucson, & Mexico to death. Can't get frequent flyer miles to Florida, I guess we started planning too late? Can anyone suggest a destination? We like hiking, museums, wildlife refuges/viewing, botanical gardens, and other natural wonders.

Palm Springs/Coachella Valley. If you can get FF miles to Los Angeles, it's a two hour drive.
|
If you catch the weather right, the Southern Calif. deserts and Death Valley can be warm, but then again, they can be freezing! Not much wildlife, though. Death Valley's main natural wonder is the color of the rocks.

How about Puerto Rico? It offers most of what you mention: hiking in a tropical forest, museums, lots of gardens, interesting islands off the main island (e.g., Vieques), and even a little night life.

USVI - STT and STJ.

I agree if you want relatively assured good/warm weather and you don't want to go back to Arizona then Puerto Rico or the US Virgins would fit the bill.
Now, if you weren't absolutely insisting it be a "US destination" there are a lot of other places in the Caribbean you might like, too. |
Hmmm, all good suggestions. What's there to do for non-golfers in Palm Springs?

If you type "Palm Springs" into the search box, you will find lots of good suggestions on this forum, including specific hiking trails and restaurants. Here are just a few to get you started:
Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Gardens Joshua Tree National Park Palm Springs Aerial Tram (hiking trails at the top) Palm Springs Follies Since there are so many airport choices in Southern California, you should be able to use some of your miles. I'm not sure who flies into the Palm Springs airport, but Ontario is the closest larger airport. You you could also try Orange County, Burbank, Long Beach, San Diego or LAX. |
