Want to avoid western Nebraska snow storm- southern route Omaha to Denver?
Just left Omaha and are headed to denver. Looks like major snow storm warning in northern and western Nebraska. Is there an alternate southern driving route, south of interstate 80, that would work?

If you make it as far as Exit 312 (Grand island), head south on US 34-231. At Hastings, make the decision on whether to go west on US34 or continue south on 231 into Kansas before heading west.
If all else fails, you can catch the Amtrak California Zephyr which will get you to Denver sometime in the morning (probably late).

Westbound Amtrak #5 will be in Hastings at 1:47AM (420 W. 1st St). You might have to buy a Roomette if all the coach seats are full. They seem to be running on time for a change arriving in Denver about 7:15AM.
Hastings is a staffed station.

Thanks so much. We had to make a quick decision and headed south on 81 at York. Then heading west on 36, going through Norton and picking up 70 at some point. Weather radar looks like we might skirt the bad stuff. Fingers crossed. The Amtrak decision is a good one, we’ve taken that trip on the CZ before.

Just looked at the map and it looks like you'll drive through it OK. I was on I70 with ice and snow once and eventually had to just stop in western Kansas for the night after sliding off the highway. When I left the next morning I found out that Colorado tends its highways MUCH better than Kansas so you may find the same.
