We joined an already booked walking tour and it was terrific. We met up with this group in a park and walked through Greenwich Village. The guide told us the guides are all NYU students or grad. students...unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the tour.

I'm taking a food walking tour in Greenwich Village & SoHo along with a friend on 4/16. Here's their website:
www.foodtours.com

heres a link that has some great suggestions for tours--my favorite is Big Onion and the eating tour suggested by Jennifer.
http://articles.citysearch.com/New_Y...ing/000301/?fp

We tried a walking tour with Adventures on a Shoestring and it was truly a bizarre experience. It was a ghost tour near Halloween so I thought there would be a lot of interest but we were the only two that showed up. The guide rambled on, ducked into buildings to keep warm and only told a couple of ghost stories amidst rambling about his personal life.

I saw a recommendation on the board once for Big Apple greeters, a free tour that you set up in advance, maybe if you do a search you can find it.

I live in New York and can tell you that the best neighborhood to tour on foot would be a Greenwich Village. I'm sorry I can't give you a specific tour group but I imagine one that features an historical angle would certainly be the best. The food tour sounds ok, but with all the history and interesting architecture, it would be a waste not to view the best of what the neighborhood has to offer. Some walking tours you can do on your own....A stroll up Madison Avenue one afternoon (from 53rd street up to 86th..if you can) and back down on 5th Avenue, a walk through Central Park, The Soho district is typical "New York chic" with expensive offbeat shops and its next to Greenwich Village. Chinatown still fascinates me after all these years. Just bring a map and if you get lost, rest assured, we New Yorkers will help you with directions. Good Luck
