walking to Greenwich Village
I was looking at the map and considering a walk from 46th Street to Greenwich Village. Looks like we could walk along Broadway all the way down. People have talked about walking down to Greenwich Village, but haven't mentioned the streets they took. I'm wondering if this would be a good way to go or if there's a more interesting route?

Well, the Village runs from the East River to the Hudson River below 14th Street and above Houston Street. Which area are you interested in seeing? Gentrified yuppie or arty?

I'd suggest following Broadway as far south as Union Square (14th St.) and then walking west to 5th Avenue and south to Washington Square Park. From Wash Sq Pk, you can decide what specific area of the Village you want to see/explore.

Gekko and Go Travel...thanks for the information! We do plan to go to Washington Park definitely, and once there, I have a walking tour from Frommer's that we'll probably follow. Gentrified yuppie or arty could both be interesting :-) Guess I just want to make sure that, as we get further from Times Square, we're not getting in a bad area or one with nothing to look at but warehouses.

You've gotten good advice. To give you an idea of distance, there are 20 north-south blocks to the mile. So from 46th to 12th (the beginning of the Village) is 34 blocks or about 1 3/4 miles.

The most direct route is walking down 7th Ave. You will hit the Village once south of 14th Street. From 46th St. to 14th Street is 1 1/2 miles. It is easy to compute distance in NYC. Going north/south there are 20 blocks to the mile. Going east/west the blocks are longer. It is approximately three north/south blocks from avenue to avenue.

I've found the stretch of Broadway from about 32nd Street to 24th Street to be a bit industrial and grimy.

Agree with Rob that Broadway isn't the loveliest of streets however there is nothing wrong with taking that route.
I like walking down Park Avenue from Midtown because you can walk right through Grand Central (if you haven't planned a look-see, it is a must), the street is lovely, and I'm a big Murray Hill fan. It really is a nice walk on a pretty day. |
