Waimia Canyon
What is the best way to see Waimia Canyon on Kauai, other than a helicopter? Is a guided tour better, or on our own? How long would it take from Poipu?

The bus tours stop where they want for as long as they want. If you have a car, you decide when where, etc.

We were staying in Poipu and the drive plus a picnic took less than 1/2 day. We didn't do any hiking along NaPali at the end of the road though.

Just got back. Takes about an hour and 15 minutes to go there. I'd drive it myself. Gives you alot more flexibility. Earlier in the day the better. It took us three times before the weather was clear enough to see anything but well worth it, it's beautiful. Roads are good to teh canyon turn off, gets alittle bumpy right at the end of the road.

Thanks for a posting that does not ask hotel information. http://www.teok.com/ does guided tours by PHD Scientist, reccommended in National Geographics they will actually explain what you are seeing but a bit pricey at $80 for the day but remember what you are getting for it. Also check out www.hawaiitrails.org I would go to near by Alakai Swamp a must see in the area, rare birds endangered fauna and the like.

Just honeymooned back from Kauai. Drive there yourself. This drive was so much easier than the Hana Rd on Maui, which took me 12 hours round trip only to & from 7 Sacred Pools.

We drove all the way to the end to Kalalau Lookout, which was way worth it. It took about two hours including 2-3 stops along the way to watch the Waimea Canyon, some water falls, Nihau island (which was covered by fog), and lots of wild chicken. :)

Check out the map below.
http://www.kauai-hawaii.com/west/index.html
Enjoy!
DC
