Wailea or Ka'anapali in late January?

My husband and I are travelling to Maui for the first time in late Jan of next year. We hear it can rain a lot then. Is that enough of a worry to pick staying in Wailea over Ka'anapali? we are interested in staying at the Hyatt but could go further south if it is advisable--maybe to the Marriott? We like nice beaches, good restaurants, not interested in night life, and a nice fun pool area. We are travelling without kids. Thank you.

Wailea will likely be drier than Kaanapali, but not too much difference.

There are several other posts on here asking the same question. Search for those for more opinions.

I believe the Hyatt is more in line with the "nice fun pool area" while the Marriott (Wailea) borders access to more in the way of "nice beach" areas.

Is there a problem with the beach at the Hyatt then?

The beach is very narrow by the Hyatt, however becomes much wider as you go north of there towards the Sheraton (Black Rock).

Click on Map of link below to see distances between Kaanapali resorts.

I would like to clarify with regard to beaches that the there is a rocky coastline fronting the Wailea Marriott, so you also need to walk some either north or south to beaches of adjacent resorts (i.e., Grand Wailea Beach, Elua beach)

The widest portion of Kaanapali beach is adjacent to Black Rock. There are two hotels here, the Kaanapali Beach Hotel and I can't remember the name of the other. The beach is quite a bit smaller in front of the Hyatt.

The hotel immediately adjacent to Black Rock is the Sheraton. The Kaanapali Beach Hotel is next door to that.

BTW, neither the Sheraton nor the KBH is as upscale as the hotels you are looking at.

We stayed in the Wailea area and loved it. It seemed less congested than other areas of Maui we saw. The beaches were beautiful, and we had great weather.

I'd go for Wailea, by a long shot!

The Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, and Fairmont are beyond our budget. We can afford the Hyatt with an Expeida package (in Kaanapali) or the Marriott in Wailea. Any advice as to the Marriott??

I stayed at the Marriot in Wailea last January when I was there for a convention. It was fine. I am not a fan of big resorts and usually stay in condos while in Hawaii but I had no complaints about the Marriott. Wailea has very nice beaches and is less congested than Kaanapali. I've stayed in Kaanapali before in a condo and enjoyed that. I just think the area in Kaanapali where all the resorts are located is crowded. But again that's just my personal preference for the type of place I like to stay.
