Waikiki-Ohana
 

We were planning to stay at The Royal Islander or Reef Lanai Ohana in Waikiki for two nights/mid Sept , as they have offered a nice Tvl Ind.Discount in the past, but we are now worried about all the building work that seems to be going on. We haven't booked anything yet- does anybody have any ideas where else we might be able to find a good rate within walking distance to the beach? Preferably with parking..( I know, we don't want much...)

Waikiki is a strip about 1 1/2 miles long by 3-4 blocks wide. So all the hotels are within walking distance of the beach.

Most hotels offer parking at $10-$15 per day.

The construction won't bother you unless you spend all of your time during the day in the hotel.

If you stay in any Ohana hotel, you can use some of the facilities at the Outrigger hotels (pools, etc.).

This site shows most of the hotels in Waikiki. The map is several years old and some of the hotels have different names or in some cases like the Edgewater don't exist. Many of the Outriggers changed to Ohana (their lesser hotels). The Waikiki Terrace was remodeled and is a condo Outrigger Luana.

Scroll to the bottom and click on Oahu hotels. Then it will give you a description o fthe hotels. You can also click on Oahu condos at the bottom. There are several inexpensive condos like the Banyan, Waikiki Sunset. Resort Quest recently bought out the Aston hotels and are having promotional rates. This would include the Waikiki Sunset.

Isn't Reef Lanai the Ohana that's way down near the park and the Zoo? The big construction project is up on Lewers Street and Beach walk (which is no where near there)... if I'm following the question correctly. As above, most any hotel in Waikiki is an easy walk to the beach.

The Royal Islander has the smallest rooms I have ever seen in Waikiki, sorta like staying on a cruise ship. I like its location, though. However with all the construction in the area of Lewers I would steer clear of any hotel in this area which icludes the Royal Islander and the Reef Lanai.

Hello all- thank you very much for your input! We have booked the Reef Lanai now- I'm sure it'll be fine. May need to book another night after our stay on North Shore if we don't get onto our returns flights on the 24th....but I'll worry about that on the 24th..!

Thanks Waldo. Obviously I have my Ohana's mixed up. Funny because i usually stay at The Hawaiiana Hotel which backs onto Saratoga. I should have known better.

I stayed at the Reef Lanai recently and it was terrible. The construction noise started at 6:30-7. Since they're going to redo the property they haven't put money into it in ages and it shows. It was the most depressing hotel I can remember staying at. One person pointed out you can use Outrigger facilities such as the pool but as all the Ohana guests do this it is packed.

What street is the Reef Lanai on ....is their alot of construction on Lewers St??

Waldo above said Reef Lanai is on Saratoga. There is a *huge* construction project on Lewers Street and Beach Walk having to do with Outrigger properties, I believe. There's websites if you 'google' for updates and status of it.

ARGH! we called the hotel and they advised the main disruption is done now.... well we'll see...we just there for two nights and will be out shopping/eating etc most of the time anyway...

I wouldn't worry about the construction as you say you will be gone most of the time anyway.

But, if the hotel has a toll free number, I would probably call them and threaten to cancel. Perhaps they'll give you a better rate.

Fraukie...if you are doing the travel industry rate...they often lower the rates closer to arrival. I have found that I get the best rates last minute. You can email them on their web site and request the industry employee rate. I have been trying to get the web cams to work and can't get them to work.
