Waikiki-Lewrers Street progress?
 

I was there in mid-November, it was still a mess.

Going to Honolulu Feb 7th. Hard to find a decent priced room due to the Pro Bowl. Did find an airline employee's special at the Outrigger Islander Waikiki (Lewers and Kalakaua). Good location, tho hotel itself is kind of crappy as I recall. I am wondering how horrid the construction still is?

There's various parts that are paneled off with plywood and scaffolding (front of the Royal Hawaiian shopping center, for instance) but I did not find it a problem out walking around. I don't know that particular hotel, but stopped into the Hawaiiana and the Breakers, had dinner at Arancino, all on Beach Walk & it was OK.

lewers street is not as bad, most of the buildings are up, stores & restaurants trying to open. beachwalk street has lots of construction due to the building of trump's building. shouldn't be a problem, it's alot nicer to walk now!!

I want to top this post just saying I was pleasantly surprised. Waikiki is most certainly doing a (continual) remodel, but there are loads of fun things to see and do.

Yea, I love Waikiki! I have been there about 70-80 times! I was wondering about the construction progress. The Lewers Street area was seedy but I loved it anyway. In November I was astonished to see Trump Tower where the tiny Royal Islander used to be. And I see there is an Embassy Suites now, too. Budget travelers will miss the bargains on Lewers!

While some streets are looking awfully Vegas-y, we still found loads of cheap & funky stuff around central Waikiki.

There is apparently a new Outrigger all suite hotel on Beachwalk that I'm thinking of staying at. I wonder if things will be "better" by July. Anyone know when the Trump is going to open?

I read somewhere along the way the Trump tower has a 2009 opening, I think.

Bill~ I think things are "better" already. Sure there's lots of construction, but honestly no more than I notice in downtown Seattle, as example. From the beach you don't see it at all.

Perhaps not but...where does it end?

I fear it may just be a matter of time before _everywhere_ becomes overdeveloped.

I mean all the construction going on along Miami Beach makes me wonder if it isn't too far from becoming as bad as Waikiki.

All a matter of your own personal perception. To me, there is nothing "bad" about Waikiki. Looking for a deserted beach, go elsewhere.

Swaying Palms~ Have you ever been to Honolulu/Waikiki? Recently? You have posted things here recently that don't seem to have much of a grip on reality (like how we should all ride bicycles instead of rent cars to get around Oahu).
