Waikiki Hotels -- Ohana Chain?
 

Planning a trip that begins in Oahu, then onto the Big Island and Maui. Since much of Oahu will be spent sight-seeing, I'm in search of a nice, clean but basic hotel in Waikiki. Would prefer "near" the beach and centrally-located, but don't need beach-front, etc. Heard some good things about the Ohana chain. Anybody have experience at Ohana hotels? Any other recommedations?

I have stayed at many different Ohanas. They are exactly what you describe: clean, basic, no frills. The Ohana closest to the beach is the Royal Islander. Very tiny, basic rooms but good location.

I just stayed at the Ohana Keauhou on the BI and TOTALLY enjoyed my week there. I found the staff to be warm and friendly and very helpful. Since I was alone, I appreciated this as they seemed like family almost..most def. the Ohana spirit. My room was perfect...w/ a balcony over looking the tide pools and ocean...it was clean, w/ a fun square tub that was great for soaking. I ate the breakfast buffet in their dining room each morning and it was super. Yep, I would stay there again in a sec!

The Ohana Keauhou on the Big Island is MUCH NICER than the Ohanas in Waikiki,

Ohana/Outrigger hotels are divided into two groups....Ohana, more economical, and Outrigger, better, upscale hotels.

There are lots in Waikiki...I usually stay at the Ohana Towers 200 Lewers St.
I request a street side room, on about the 10th-13th floor. Usually this will give you a "peek-a-boo" view of Waikiki beach and the ocean. The Outrigger on the Beach (across the street from the Towers) is ocean front and a bit more up scale.

Particularly like breakfast in the outside garden sitting at the Towers, plus the general location to the beach and other activities.

Have also stayed at the Keauhou Beach Hotel in Kona...and concur with other posters comments.

we stayed at the Ohana Reef Towers on Lewers st last November.It was clean and comfy, just a little dated.We were there for three weeks and still found no problems with it as we spent most of our time out of the room.The beach is a 3min walk (straight down to the bottom of the street and cut down the lane between the two hotels.)if you go to www.ohanahotels.com you can do a 360 degree walk round of the hotels.

The Ohana Hotels used to be Outriggers, but they decided to do some marketing differentiation so the Outriggers could chase the upscale crowd and the Ohanas could appeal to the value conscious. Combined they are the largest lodging group in Hawaii so they must be doing it right.
