Waikiki Beach Marriott
 

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on the Waikiki Marriott in Oahu. I booked a package through their site and just wanted some feedback.

It's in the center of the action. You could have a great view or not. There are always lots of people staying there. I've gone there for several weddings. It seems nice.

I used to work there and I can vouch for good service! They renovated a LOT of the hotel over the last few years. Make sure to visit the Ocean Terrace bar!

We stayed there a month when we first moved here last year.
It has a nice pool in the new tower, and the new tower (opened in 2002) is much nicer than the old so you might want to try for a room there. It is definitely walking distance to most everything in Waikiki and it's across the street (Kalakaua) from the beach.

Thank you all for your responses. Not quite sure what type of room I'll be getting. Since it was a package booked directly with the marriott site, it didn't specify the type of room I'll be getting. Hopefully they'll be nice and put us up in the new tower with a nice view since we're there on our honeymoon. Just wondering, do they give you preferential treatment if you're there on your honeymoon? One of my friends was in oahu for her honeymoon and as soon as she mentioned she was there for that reason, she and her husband got very special treatment.

One more question, how far is the airport from the Marriott? We're not renting a car so would it be easier to hop on a taxi or one of those shuttle vans ?

It's about 25 minutes or so. I think a cab is about $30. There are also shuttles for $13 RT each. It's obviously much slower, but the driver also acts as a tour guide a little to point out different points of interest. We stayed at the Hyatt and it took about 45 minutes from what I remember (the Marriott is about 2 or 3 blocks from the Hyatt).
On the way back to the airport, we were the last to be picked up so it was just as good as a taxi.

where's the best place to go for breakfast?

The Pacific Beach Hotel - very close to Marriott - has a great breakfast buffet. Their restaurant also has an aquarium which is about 2 stories high.

how much is the breakfast buffet at the Pacific Beach hotel??

Are tips usually added onto the bills or is it separate? Does anyone know on average how much a couple spends a day on meals- breakfast, lunch and dinner? I heard from several people that Oahu was the cheapest island to go to. Everything there is cheaper than the other Hawaiian islands. Is that true?

I've mentioned before there is nothing better than the breakfast buffet at Duke's with the view. I believe it's around $15.

I mentioned on another thread I like Panya Bakery on Kapiolani and McCully.

Of course Malasadas at Leonard's (spelling?) is a yummy tradition.

thanks islandmom. where exactly is duke's? brunch on the beach sounds like a good idea. i saw melissa's thread on taro for bkfst. it tastes weird to me. my brother loves it but i just can't get used to the taste.

I have stayed at the newly renovated Waikiki MArriott many times. Best rooms are at the front end of the front tower and end in "33" or "34." They have an extra wall of windows and the room is very spacious. The higher the floor the more spectacular the view (I think there are 25 stories.)

Breakfast buffet was $9.95 at Dukes last time we were there; it is a real bargain with great views.
