Wacky Hawaiian Drinks
My wacky hawaiian dream is to find the wacky hawaiian-style drinks you see in movies. The ones made out of pineapples or coconuts or in wacky-shaped glasses with fruit, umbrellas, crazy straws and other oddities lining the rims. Anyone know where I can get such drinks in the Hawaiian Islands (mainly Waikiki, BI and Maui)? Thanks!

Just about any place! Those drinks truly do exist, but don't be surprised, they usually cost $7 or more.

Literally everywhere, including the airport!

Go to Duke's on Waikiki... they have a drink menu with some fun options. I got a Tropical Itch that came with a backscratcher sticking out of it. I think that counts as wacky! :-)
I think every drink I had in Hawaii, other than wine, had either a pineapple or flower on the rim. I also recommend trying a lava flow! |
Ditto on the lava flow! YUMMY!

Almost all of the resort pool bars have several of the Hawaiian style frozen drinks. So, you don't even have to go out to find them! I agree with previous posters, the lava flows are awesome! I had them at several places, but thought the best was at Bubba Gump's in Lahaina.
I found that the bartenders at the resort bars enjoyed showcasing their specialities-just tell them a few of your favorite ingredients, and they will mix up a surprise drink not offered on a "standard" drink menu. You will have no problems finding these drinks; however, they are expensive (and loaded with sugar, you'll want to avoid dessert after dinner!) |
The Sheraton makes the best lava flows and Chi Chi's. Our boys loved the non alcholic lava flow smoothies there. But, they were $8.00 each! We bought pina coloda mix and frozen sweetened strawberries at Safeways and made them in our condo with or blender in the evening after dinner. Our boys thought they were yummy!

Even better than the lava flows are tbe Blue Hawaiians. Mmmm. Wow. yummy!
|
ok - Im hooked what are the ingredients to a blue hawaiian to make at home? I saw people drinking them but never wanted to give up my Chi Chi with fresh pineapple wedge!

I had a new Hawaiian drink while in Waikiki last summer - it was at the Waikiki Marriott upstairs on the pool deck where the band was playing - anyway - it was called a Blue Tahiti and put Blue Hawaiis to shame (IMO) - I loved it. I loved the lava flows too, I had a few of those around town and also had a great drink at the beach bar at the Moana just after checking into my hotel and talking a walk down the beach. It was called "A Day At The Beach" which I thought was appropriate since I'd just arrived. On another note, the Royal Hawaiian has its own "pink beer" which is made at an island brewery just for the pink palace and it wasn't half bad either. There's just something about those yummy exotic cocktails..... too bad they cost so much - about $8.00 (plus tax).

The the inter island terminal at honolulu airport has a bar (forgot the name) that offers various concoctions. Yes the mai tais are $7 but they and all the other drinks we saw poured are no "one shot" wonders, poured is the operative word !
Then there's the "Wiki Wacky Woo", right Kal ? :) |
The best Hawaiian drink I've ever had was in Chicago.
I was at a travel trade show, the IT&ME (one of the biggest in the world) and Hawaii had grouped together about 75 booths. Every afternoon about 2PM they Hawaii booths had FRESH Mai Tai's flown in from the Big Island. Oh. My. Gawd. I cannot tell you how good and fresh they were. Fresh pinapple and other fruit. Enough liquor to kick butt. Drink the Mai Tais. I hope I spelled that correctly. |
Regarding the recipe for a Blue Hawaii. It's just a vodka collins with a splash of Blue Curacao in it.
|
I keep hearing lava flows mentioned, but I've got to ask -- what ARE they? :)
|
Here is a recipe for a Lava Flow. I make the non-alcoholic for my kids just with strawberries and pina colada mix.
If ya don't like the Rum, use Vodka instead. Yummy! Lava Flow 1 ounces light rum 2 ounces pineapple juice 6 ounces pina colada mix (coconut cream and pineapple juice) 1 ounce strawberry puree 1 small chunk pineapple, for garnish Blend rum, pineapple juice, and pina colada mix with 1 cup of ice. Next, take a glass and coat the inside with strawberry puree. Pour in colada blend. Finally, use a spoon to drag the strawberry puree up through the colada drink, creating a pink stripe. Garnish with a pineapple chunk, and serve. |
Pablo, mi amigo!
