** W Hotel --- San Francisco **
We are going to S. F. in Feb. & are interested in the W Hotel. Has anybody stayed there lately ? How are the rooms & location of the hotel ? Any booking deals ? Thanks in advance

We stayed there a few years ago, and thought it was pretty nice, although I felt they tried just a little too hard to be trendy (maybe it was all those lit candles in the lobby). It's just down the street from the MOMA, and near Union Square, so I thought it was a pretty good location. There was just one thing that seemed a bit weird, which is that the door to our bathroom was a sliding door (hard to block out noise) and was made of wavy semi-transparent glass - just distorted enough that you couldn't really make out shapes distinctly, but didn't seem very private. Since we were sharing the room with two of our twenty-something sons, it felt kind of awkward for me. It wouldn't have been an issue if it were just DH and me.

If oyu don't know the W chain you should check out the chain on their web page...it is the "hip" part of the Starwood chain, trendy, lots of hipsters in the lobby bar, cool restaurant...I LOVE the chain myself but it's not for everyone.
The SF location is just off market st near MOMA, a great loc for public transport and downtown. And as a poster above noted the bathrooms are strange but it's another design feature in all (or most) of the W's. Rooms vary in size but the cheapest room, a "wonderful" room is pretty small. |
the only deal l I know of is on the web site
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotel...language=en_US but expedia, travelocity etc may have more discounts for prepayment. The W's are usually the pricier ones in the starwood chain. |
I stayed in the hotel a while ago and really liked it. Re the trendiness, it reminded me of the old SNL skit, The Sprockets.

The glass toilet and shower chambers (sometimes just the door is glass, sometimes the whole bathroom has glass walls) are apparently a "feature" of the chain. I was just reading a review of another of their properties which mentioned this.
