VRBO Apartment Washington DC
 

I have started another thread as I did not want to hi-jack the other one about places to stay in Washington DC.

Just wondering about this one.

There are 6 of us 4 adults, and two children so maybe a bit small, but could make it work for four days!!!

Looks to be in an area closer to the sights then the first one I linked in the other thread.

Any other recommendations.

What do you want to know? I used to live a few blocks from there, actually in a better area that really was right near the Capitol/Supreme COurt and I would have never stayed in an apartment on the ground floor with all those windows myself due to security reasons. My apt was first floor not ground floor (meaning some steps up, as it was above an English basement), in a better area and it had bars on the window near the front stoop where someone could easily enter. My other windows were on a courtyard that was locked.

It would be convenient enough in terms of logistics and walking/metro stations. Some people just aren't as concerned about ground -floor apts as I am, but DC isn't crime-free and there have certainly been holdups and muggings on Capitol Hill this year. I think the crime rate is lower than when I lived there in the 90s, but I wouldn't rent an apt like that in any big city when there are alternatives, it would make me too nervous.

Presuming that is ground floor, it sounds like it is when they call it a "garden apartment". Otherwise, it's up to you, it does look very small for 6 people, with 4 adults. So 2 adults will be sleeping in that closet with the bunk beds?

You might also post on Trip Advisor. There is a regular poster there named Victoriam who is very familiar with the VRBO market in DC.

No Christina, two children will be sleeping in the bunk beds. Thanks for your thoughts though about security etc.

Would getting your luggage down that path be a problem? (No need to answer - just something to consider.)

Cristina's information about the neighborhood appears to be 15-20 years old. It's a perfectly fine residential neighborhood.

Sorry to be that poster, but do you have a target range per night you're looking to spend in DC? And it sounds like you're pretty set on VRBO or other home option?

On the other thread I mentioned that a January trip should offer you plenty of choices. I should amend that to say that you will be in DC during the days running up to the Presidential Inauguration. You're smart to get your place sorted out sooner than later, definitely before the November election. Since it's a complete regime change no matter who is elected, there will be advance teams coming to town looking for temporary but longer term places to stay.

Here's one that sleeps 6 in Woodley Park very close to the metro and the zoo. It's a great neighborhood, lots of restaurants & services near by. One of the easy to navigate DC Circulator buses runs up & down Connecticut Ave, the same street the metro station is on.

Thanks so much obxgirl for your link. As you can probably tell we are on a budget, $ 250 US a night is probably as high as we could go, this converts to
$ 373 NZ a night. The place in your link looks great, and we were planning on going to the zoo, which is close by.

Our dates are Dec 31 to January 4th, so before the inauguration I think.

Good to know the area that Christina was talking about is deemed to be a safe enough area now.

I'll second the recommendation for the location of the apartment obxgirl suggests -- IMO, it is a superb location!

Agree, apt obxgirl found is in a very nice neighborhood. It's close to the red line metro which will get you to the major tourist sites quickly. Lots of restaurants nearby.

Inauguration in Jan 20.

The owner hasn't responded to my e-mail. Have booked 2 rooms at Best Western Georgetown in the meantime, free cancellation up to the 30 Dec 2016.

I'm not familiar with that hotel, nelsonian, and Georgetown is a lovely neighborhood, but not the most convenient to the major tourist sights. Unless it's on the edge of Georgetown near Foggy Bottom and walkable to the Metro, I'd keep looking,

nelsonian, the BW G/town is a sold tourist class hotel and a fine Plan B if the right VRBO doesn't surface. The neighborhood is technically West End which is adjacent to G/town, Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle. 5-7 minute walk to Foggy Bottom metro, easy access to 2 Circulator bus lines, plenty of restaurants and services including two grocery stores (Trader Joes & Whole Foods).

Just down the street from the BW and slightly closer to the metro station is One Washington Circle, similar set up to the BW as a hotel in an older apartment building -- both with more spacious rooms than the typical hotel and with kitchenettes. I'd give the nod to OWC for niceness -- rates are typically comparable to the BW.

Meanwhile, hope the VRBO owner gets back to you, or already has.

I agree to keep looking for an apt. Much nicer to stay in with all the people you have. I find people on Air BnB more responsive than VRBO. Good luck!

Ah, never mind, I withdraw my objection! Should be a fine location, if nothing more spacious pops up.

The Best Western is actually offering a free breakfast which I thought might come in handy!!

We stayed down the block at the Renaissance - it's a great neighborhood! (Should you decide to eat one upscale meal out, and you like Indian Food, Rasika West is across the street, and it's great!)

Just some options!

Still looking at hotels although have booked the Best Western in Georgetown. However hotels.com has a sale on today, and this hotel has come up at a similar price. Anyone know anything about it.

Hyatt Place Washington DC/US Capitol

Seems to be higher rating than the Best Western and has free breakfast also.

The Best Western is a tourist class hotel in a really good location. The Hyatt is a newer business class hotel in a not especially interesting location. Not much to walk to except the metro station (NoMa-Galludet).
