Volcano, Big island
Does anybody know of walking day tours of Kilauea? I read that you can hire a guide. Thanks, Bill

Is this what you are looking for?

You can also drive much of the area yourself and then go to the visitors center and sign up for the free hikes and guided tours given by the park rangers.

You don't ned a guide. All of the trails are well-marked and you can do them yourself. If you want to do serious hikes, take one of the Ranger-guided ones.

An important point to remember if you try to hike out to the active lava flows with kids (sometimes this is practical, other times not - check the NP site), is to make sure that they have good closed-toe shoes. Recent lava flows have lots of sharp edges and cut very easily, and kids (or adults) can end up easily hurt if you aren't wearing good shoes.

Make sure and bring water, a hat, sun-protective clothing, and shoes with good soles. The lava fields are shadeless and very very hot from the sun. The lava is sharp and can easily cut through sandals or tennis shoes.
