I was without internet from 6/17 until 21st and never heard about it. Thanks for the headsup on it. Glad it wasn't anything big like the one last October while we were in Hawaii.

though there's no lava flowing now, it's still worth a trip up there for those of you going to the Big Island soon.

Here's some of the press release about it from the National Park Service....

A significant part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is reopening Friday (6/29), including the entire Chain of Craters Road.

"Eruptive activity is now at a near all-time low relative to the last 25 years," said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando in a written statement. "Based on communications with scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, we feel confident that roads and coastal trails can be safely reopened."

The lava that had oozed out of a 275-yard fissure in a remote and inaccessible part of the park remains still and cooling.

No new lava has been seen since, either at Puu Oo or at the usual ocean entry sites.

Several areas on the east rift zone remain closed, including the Napau Trail, Naulu Trail and the parking lot at Mauna Ulu, where ongoing fire suppression efforts are based. Puu Oo and the park's eastern boundary near Kalapana remain closed.

Rangers are being posted at the end of Chain of Craters Road, and visitors can take short walks to the 2003 lava flow or the Holei sea arch.

The park cautions that the usual hazards still exist, including sulfurous fumes, steaming vents, steep cliffs and deep earth cracks, overgrown with vegetation. Visitors are urged to remain on marked trails.

Regular park entrance fees apply.

One of my neighbors just returned from a cruise around the islands.. it was very rough when they were around the B.I., and many were sick.. at around 2 am, she said there was a big jolt and they were told it was an earthquake.

She said it was a very different feeling at sea than the land ones we have in Alaska. Also, she said she is just getting her land legs back after the trip because it was so rough. J.
