Visiting relative wants to play Pebble Beach

A relative will be visiting me later this summer and wants to play golf at Pebble Beach. How do I find out info about costs, etc? TIA

BeachBoi Mar 29th, 2007 11:13 AM

www.pebblebeach.com Non guest rate = $450 plus cart.....Yes, thats Four Hundred Fifty Greenbacks...

BeachBoi Mar 29th, 2007 11:14 AM

ooops misread....Beginning Sunday it will be $475.00......

Ag3046 Mar 29th, 2007 11:30 AM

hahahahahahahaha

This reminds me why I haven't taken up golf

I have an acquaintance who plays there several times a year. His take is, that for someone with a handicap of more than 10, it is a complete waste of money. He also strongly recommends that for the true PB "experience", get a caddy. There's more.If you get a caddy, the fee is $65 plus gratuity.A cheapskate will tip the standard 20%, total to caddy $78.Once again, for the true experience, to fell like you really truly belong on the links, give the caddy a C-note. You'll feel like a real power golfer rather than a cheapskate.

I thought having a caddy and PB was mandatory?

woodysagoodboy Mar 29th, 2007 11:53 AM

You don't need to have a 10 HDCP to enjoy PB. If you divide the cost by the number of hours played and the number of hours he/she will spend telling his/her friends about it, it's a bargain. I do have to agree with BeachBoi that a good caddy would be a nice touch. Or, he/she could play a $100 course and completely stock his/her liquor cabinet.

BeachBoi Mar 29th, 2007 11:55 AM

No...you can ride a cart, walk with a caddy, or carry your own sticks.....But, if it was ME, I would want the total experience.Get a caddy, an expert on the course.Plus you get all the "lore" associated with PB.Can you imagine telling the guys back at the home course:" I rode around Pebble"....

BeachBoi Mar 29th, 2007 11:57 AM

woody...It's also not a 4 hour course either.Sometimes more like 6.So Greens fee divided by hours played, really not bad.Yes, it's great cocktail chatter at least for a year or so.

I've played there twice, the last time being about 20 years ago. I can still remember almost every shot from each of those rounds (and I... ummm.... took a lot of shots ;-)). So, is it worth it? If you play the game, you bet it is.

But, if $475 plus caddy is too much for your visiting relative, TAW, send him/her north to Bandon Dunes in my neck of the woods. It's rated just as highly as Pebble (personally, I think it's a better golf course), and you'll save a couple hun'. ((y))

I live there. Are you good golfers? If so, it's worth it. BeachBoi gave the website with the specifics. You should stay at one of their resorts in order to get a decent tee date/time. The green fee is less if you stay at one of the resorts. If you're not good golfers, then swing your clubs at the Pacific Grove Muni - it's gorgeous, with fabulous ocean views. There's a 3 par at Pebble called the Peter Hay - I like that for an easy day.

Hey Beachbum - them is fighin' words. We're the number one course, baby!

woodysagoodboy Mar 29th, 2007 12:37 PM

What about this? Playing when the Sun is shining and the fog is about 30 feet off the deck and your shot disappears into what heaven must look like.

beachbum Mar 29th, 2007 12:47 PM

Just don't come after me with that pooper scooper, Tess. ;-) Surprised the heck out of me too but I think it was Golf Digest that rated Pacific Dunes as the number 1 public play course in the country, and Bandon Dunes Resort as one of the top 5 golf destinations on the planet. So, don't get mad at me. ;-) You really should come up and play 'em sometime. Incredible golf courses, with scenery to match.

I was going to suggest the municipal golf course too. Although it doesn't have the same effect when effect when telling friends about it, your wallet will be a lot heavier and you still get fabulous views :)

We were just talking about Pebble Beach. Several years ago, my daughter who lives in Carmel gave my husband a round at Pebble Beach for father's day. At that time it was $250. On her salary at the time it was very generous but something she wanted to do. My husband is an avid golfer but he is not a 10 - more like an 18. The day he played his round was incredible. It was sunny, 75 degrees and no wind. He shot a great round and on the 18th had a birdie (there were people sitting on the clubhouse balcony watching and cheered for him when his single putt went in the hole) Like I said we just talked about that day and he said it was a memory he will take to his grave and certainly the best gift he had ever been given. Sometimes its not just about the money.

We live in the area. The advice for PACIFIC GROVE GOLF LINKS is excellent...even if you also play Pebble Beach. They just built a new clubhouse for PG. One nine is on the ocean. The views are fantastic. The green fees are around $40.00. It is known as one of the finest public courses around.
