Visiting Point Bonita Lighthouse in SF
We will be in SF for the weekend, arriving Friday evening 9/23, and want to visit Point Bonita LH. The LH is only open 12:30 to 3:30 on Sat and Sun. Would one day be preferable over the other? We want to do the city/Alcatraz tour which will take all of one day and we'd like to do a Chinatown tour which is another 3 hours. We'd like to drive up to Battery Point for views and then visit the LH. We only have 2 days and want to work everything in. Interested in knowing what to expect crowd-wise (is it a big tourist draw?) and traffic-wise. Also, has anyone visited the LH and can tell me how difficult the hike is to get to it? Some sites say 1/2 mile while others say a mile w/steep climb. And what about crossing the suspension bridge? (I have a thing about heights but usually manage) If anyone has actually done this, would love to be prepared. Thanks!

Trying this again in the daytime to see if anyone has some help for us. Thanks!

I think this is the first time I hear about Bonita. Usually the locals go to Point Reyes. (topping)

Do you already have tix for Alcatraz? I read another thread yesterday where people were not able to get the tix they wanted.
|
No tickets purchased yet--hoping they will still be available. Hoping to get replies here that will help us decide itinerary and then will try online to get them.

Topping ... anyone?

Are you serious that you cn get this in in only three days?
Why Point Bonito? I hope you have already booked your Alcaraz tour. Why do you need a Chinatown tour? Just walk down Grant Avenue and stroll in the side streets. What is the attraction for the Point Bonito Lighthouse that would cause you to miss most of San Francisco. You have scheduled way too much for two days. My advice...take a half day tour of San Francisco...forget Alcatraz...and then go back, yourselves, to the most interesting of the places you have seen. |
buy tix in advance for alcatraz off of the internet or you may not get to go. the evening tour is spooky.
also agree with doing a tour of SF...there are some great trolly tours that start early. |
What if you go across the bridge and take the first chance on Saturday, so that you can see the rest at your own pace. When you say Battery Point, are you referring to the one at Crescent City, near Oregon? Not in two days, my Texas friend.
That would be like driving from Las Colinas to El Paso. |
To answer your question, JTR, we have been to SF twice before and the stop this time is part of a 2-week drive from Seattle to SF down the coast to enjoy the scenery and photograph lighthouses. Point Bonita is an unusual one because of the suspension bridge so we're interested. The WizWok
tours have been praised on this forum and sound fun although we have walked down Grant and know we don't need a tour. Agree SF is such a great city with so much to do, but haven't found an answer yet on timing to visit LH, Sat or Sun, morning or afternoon. Thanks for all suggestions. |
fehgeddaboudit, we are going to Battery Point LH at Crescent City but I thought I'd seen that term used to describe old military area in GG Nat'l Recreaction area. That's what I meant; sorry I misspoke. I copied the directions from one of Stu's postings and do want to drive up there for the views.
Hey, you know your Texas, and you've put our driving distances in perspective. I'm only about 15 minutes from Los Colinas, BTW. :) |
