Visiting KU in Lawrence...have questions...

We'll be staying in Kansas City, MO but we're going to take a few hours to see KU...specificaly the Hall of Athletics.
I mapquested Kansas City (plaza area) to Lawrence and it shows portions of I-70 as toll....any idea how much? I've only been on a toll road once and I messed up the paying and got a huge fine in the mail so I'm a little "toll road shy".
Is the "Hall of Athletics" the actual basketball court or is separate? My boys love KU and when I mentioned a Hall of Fame they're excited but will we actually be able to see the basketball court and football stadium?
Thanks for any advice?

What else to see or where to eat in Lawrence?
Our time will be short but don't want to miss some "must see" or "must eat"

thanks!!

The toll road will be a card system. When you get on the toll portion you will be given a card, when you exit you will pay for the distance you traveled. No buckets for pitching (and missing).

I travel that way twice a year, but go through to Topeka, never have gotten off in Lawrence. I believe their exits are manned so there will be a person there to tell you. And as someone else pointed out, it is also printed on the ticket. I think it will be less than $2.

What part of KC will you be in? If you are on the south side, thake I-435 west to K-10. No need to go on the toll road.

My favorite restaurants in Lawrence include: The Free State Brewing Company, Hayes Hamburger & Chili, Local Burger, and The Orient Vietnamese Cuisine. Plan on parking near or along Massachusetts St and walking among the stores and restaurants.

I don't know about admission to Allen Fieldhouse but they will be able to get a good look at Memorial Stadium.

Memorial Park Cemetery on East 15th Street has the James Naismith Memorial and The Watkins Community Museum of History at the east end of Mass in the downtown has a nice display devoted to Naismtih.

NOt sure of the age of your kids, but there's neat history musuem up on campus (approx 1 mile from Allen Field House). They have a very extensive dinosaur bone collection (one of the largest in the world). Going through the musuem takes less than an hour

I. 70 toll is easy and less than $2.00. If you're staying in Overland Park or south of KC, you will want to take 435 to Lawrence / then catch K10. Don't go this way if you're staying near downtown, Crown Center or the Plaza. Take I.70 from those locations. Let your sons walk the campus. Very cool buildings and lots of Jayhawk figurines, etc. Go downtown Lawrence to Mass St. Lots of patio restaurants - nothing is expensive exept maybe Pachamama's. Lots of t-shirt shops on Mass too if you want to pick up Jayhawk souveniers.

TP, well I hope you enjoy your visit I believe if memory serves me right that the toll on that road is less then five bucks, don’t quote me on that but last time I went that way I had a Ten and did just fine. Don’t worry about not getting the toll right there is someone to tell you how much it is and we are a friendly people.

There is an area in Lawrence I don’t recall the name but it is like an old shopping district lots of little great shops and places to go, see Keith’s website I am sure he can tell you the name.

Have fun and remember that Lawrence is filled with college kids and hills so they drive nuts.

Thanks Sunflowerguy03,

The downtown that you are referring to is mostly along Massachusetts St.

The toll on that stretch is $1.40 or $1.45 depending on which Lawrence exit is used.

My website (which I try to promote too heavily here) is http://www.kansastravel.org

Keith, you are a wealth of information whatever would we do without you?

We like I-70 much better than going south and over and have always stayed in the Plaza. Piece of cake getting on and over to Lawrence. $1.40 I believe for the 2nd exit into Lawrence which is the main drag -- Iowa St.

I would visit The Wheel (or long name WagonWheel) just off campus. It was a regular stop for us on game days and trips visiting our KU kids. Burgers and pizza. A classic college grill and bar. No frills!!

Hope you get to see Phog Allen Field House. Enjoy your trip! Lawrence is a pretty, little town. Can't get my daughter to leave and my son is going through withdrawals. Very charming and picturesque.

Have a great trip.
