Visiting Beaufort, SC
Driving from NY to Charleston, Hilton Head, and then Savannah. Want to see Beaufort, are we better off going to Beaufort on our way to from Charleston? Or to Hilton Head...while in Hilton Head, or on our way back to NY after a stay in Savannah? We can spend an afternoon or an overnight.
Beaufort is gorgeous but not a great many things to do there. I'd spend an afternoon and an overnight.

Tons of movies out about that area (Beaufort, Charleston, Savannah). Of course rent Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Bagger Vance, The Prince of Tides, The Big Chill, and Forest Gump to name of few.

Beaufort is actually closer to Savannah.
Spirit of Old Beaufort walking tours look interesting and also the John Mark Verdier house museum and Beaufort Museum are interesting. Ironically I'll be in Beaufort/Savannah myself in a few days.

We lived in Beaufort for two years and loved it. Take hwy 17 S when you leave Charleston and it's one hour drive. Downtown has tons of Civil War history. Take a buggy ride from the downtown marina area or walking tour to see the pre-civil war homes, the arsenal, and churches. Take hwy. 21 south over the downtown bridge all the way to Fripp Island. You can stop at Hunting Island State Park and visit the light house and beach. Stop at Gay Seafood on the right at Harbor Island bridge and watch the shrimp boats come in. Good local seafood at Steamers or Ollie's out that way. There is a nice BestWestern downtown very convenient, or several B&B's housed in historical homes. The Beaufort Inn is gorgeous with a 4 star restaurant. Have drinks or coffee on the patio at Plum's and watch the bridge open for the "snow birds" coming south. Have fun.

We ate at a B&B there for dinner one evening - GREAT meal - I think it was the Beaufort Inn. Must have res.
