Visit Lancaster by train from Philadelphia?

I have found it is only about 1hr 15min or so on Amtrack from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Can anyone tell me how far the Amtrack train station is from the sights of Lancaster (eg. the quilt museum)?

It's easy to get to Lancaster by train. The problem is that there is no public transportation. Almost everything is in outlying areas, so it's impossible to visit without a car (I suppose you might be able to hire a taxi for the day, which would cost hundreds of dollars). The Amtrak terminal is downtown and not really near any tourist sights.

Once you get to Lancaster, will you have transportation as the train station is downtown? Most of the Amish tourist attractions are away from the downtown scene.

The Lancaster station is in the city of Lancaster. Most of the tourist sites are not. The station is about 15 blocks from the quilt museum.

You can take a bus or long walk from the Lancaster train station to downtown Lancaster -- the train station is located several blocks north of downtown. There are some attractions downtown (Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum, Central Market, and Lancaster Cultural History Museum, as well as some attractive architecture). It is also possible, but a bit slow, to see some of the Amish-area sights via bus from downtown (such as the Amish Farm and House or Wheatland). Others, such as Ephrata Cloister, will likely require a car -- and a car is probably most efficient for getting around the area.

Do not even consider using taxis, as they are horribly unreliable in this city.

Thanks everyone. We won't have a car so it sounds best to save this for another trip.

Your time is much appreciated.
