Visa for Australia?

Hi,

I've heard that U.S. citizens are required to have a visa to travel in Australia. Is this true? I'm going there for a 2 week vacation. Is there any cost for the visa, and how to apply? I already bought my ticket from United.

Thanks.
JC

I got my ticket through Qantas but the travel visa was part of it and there was no additional cost if I remember. Check with United and repost this question on the Australia board too. Somebody will definitely have the right answer.

You can do it on-line. It cost AU $ 20.00. You'll need your passport number when you fill in the on-line form. It is good for one year.

I have a friend leaving for Sydney tonite. He called United and applied for the ETA-Electronic Travel Authority, which is the required visa.It is free,a multiple entry visa with a 3 month maximum stay per entry, valid for 12 months from date of issue. It was quick and painless.

Here is the web site for on line visa:

http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/

I used it last year and had no problems at all. Breezed right through passport control at Sydney Airport.

You should be able to get the visa through United if things haven't changed, and I don't believe there is a fee for the short-term leisure visa. I would call United's international reservations line and speak with them. They should be able to handle this.
