Virginia City
 

This post is odd for Nevada other then Vegas. Would like to spend 2 days in this area (on the way to Vegas) Think it might be a different stop after Death Valley, Yosemite, S.F. and napa. Any ideas on lodging? Distant and drive time from Napa? looked on web found 7 mile canyon; Chollar mansion and others.will we see some of the old WILD WEST

Try the Gold Hill Hotel. I just googled it. It's between HW 50 and Virgina City. It's kind of like a B&B..very historic and it might be the perfect place to stay. You don't say when you are going. It's just a few minutes up to Virginia City from there. They also have a great restaurant.

I think from Napa, figure about 5 hours. It's 3 and a half to 4 hours from Napa to Reno...depending on how many CHP are about. I would come into Reno on HW 80, take 395 South toward Carson City. Take the South Virginia Street exit marked Virginia City/Carson City and turn left on HW 341 up to Virginia City. You actually drive through VC and start heading down the hill on the other side and you will get to Gold Hill...it's BEFORE you hit HW 50. I think this route is more direct than going into Carson, then left on HW 50 and left on..hmmm can't think of it but it's marked..and heading up the hill. I'm not sure there is a motel in VC anymore. I haven't been up there for awhile and I think I saw it closed. You MIGHT google B & B's for Virginia City. I think there are a couple of them up there. That or the Gold Hill Hotel would be the way to go if you want to stay in the near area. Do a littel research and you will find that there is a lot more to VC than the touristy stuff, although that can be some fun. There is a visitor center and you can get a lot of info from them. They have an old restored steam train that goes from VC to Carson City that is fun. Lots of old victorian houses, many being lovingly restored. The silver that came out of there practically built San Francisco, and also helped subsidize the Union Army during the Civil War. There were over 20,000 people living there at one time, many of them Chinese..brought to work the mines AND do peoples laundry etc. Anyway, if you dig around a little bit, there is a lot to see other than the T-shirt shops on main street. If you want a larger selection of places to stay, Carson City is an option as are Minden and Gardnerville. All of these are only a short drive from Virginia City

Agree with previous post regarding CC, as an option if would like something modern. Pinon Plaza Hotel is on Hwy 50 in Carson City.

The steam train ride is enjoyable, but it does not go to Carson City. That won't happen for a couple of years.

Another fun thing to do, is have your picture taken dressed in Victorian clothes with a saloon background.

Yea..about the train...I worded that wrong. As far as places to stay..The Gold Hill Hotel, if not too expensive for you, would really be a way of getting into the spirit of the west, and the whole era. They have series of dinners with lectures about the area and the history, and other activities. The hotel itself dates from the 1860's. They have a great Sunday brunch...anyway, staying there would add so much to your experience and be really special VS. just another motel in Carson City. NOT the same at all. But.....it's about whatever makes you happy.

VC seems interesting. we have Reservations in Sequoia- kings canyon, but after Yosemite Sequoia can be redundent I have been told, thought VC would be a change of pace .We have to drive back to Vegas to catch a flight ,how long of a drive is it? We will spent 2 nights in Vegas.

All day for sure. You ARE talking about VC to Las Vegas? It's long AND boring.

I mapquested the trip from Carson city to Vegas 12 hours, 400 plus miles. we will have to work something out or save VC for another time

I wouldn't really want to spend more than a day in Virginia City, although it is very interesting. To break up the drive to LV, you might want to consider spending a night in Bishop. That way you might be able to fit in a visit to Bodie.
