Virginia Beach - Outer banks last minute Dec trip
 

I'm looking for suggestions for what area to stay from VA Beach south to the Outer Banks. I have a surprise birthday present to leave this coming Sunday (driving from VT) for a romantic week vacation and I've always wanted to check out the Outer Banks. We like nature walking areas and we like to take in the ocean. We'll see some of the historical sites here and there around Norfolk etc. I know nothing about the coastal area and I'm wondering what town might be a good base. We'd like to stay on the ocean in a place (hotel/inn) with a kitchen so if anyone has a favorite place, please feel free to mention it.

I would suggest that you take a route that goes down the Garden State Parkway to Cape May, NJ and then takes the ferry to Lewes, DE. Continue south on the DELMARVA to Chincoteague. Spend the first night there, a long drive, but you get a break by taking the ferry. The next morning, drive through the National Park and check out the ponies, the snow geese may be in too. Then go south and take the bay bridge tunnel and visit the Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown areas. Then head south to the Outer Banks. I'm not sure how much will be open in North Carolina on the shore, but certainly some lodging should be available. Do check out Kitty Hawk and if it is open go to the lighthouse and climb to the top.

Have you considered an oceanfront home rental somewhere in the Outer Banks? Plenty of choices and prices will be off season. You can probably negotiate a partial week rental this time of year if you stay is less than a week. OBX is year round community -- many restaurants and shops are open though some may have reduced hours.

You might also look into staying somewhere such as Corolla or Duck or you could go further south to Avon or even Hatteras Village.

A lot depends on what you want available to do besides the beach itself.
