Vineyard Recommendations for the drive between San Fran and Healsdburg

We will be driving next Thursday, mid day, from San Francisco airport up to Healdsburg. We were hoping someone could make some recommendations of 2-3 great wineries to stop at along the way.

Anything that stands out, like incredible scenery, a great place to lunch, hard to find wine, or a great little known spot (our favorite).

Thanks for your recommendations!

Well, in Healdsburg itself, I always stop at the Flying Goat Cafe for coffee and a pastry. It's right off the central square/park in the middle of Healdsburg.

I don't know where your vineyard route will take you, but if any of your chose destinations is on Dry Creek Road, the scenery there is very nice indeed. For a longer drive, go east from Healdsburg and take the Geysers Road up to the summit - it's very remote and has an incredible view of Sonoma to the coast.

Here's my favorite day in that area:

Start with Alexander Valley Vintners, smallish winery with very homey tasting room. Then head on to Chateau Souveraign, a large French style chateau. That's a great place for lunch. Their restaurant is excellent and the views are wonderful.

Next stop Ferrari Carano (and a trip to an Italian Villa), taste the wines and visit the gardens. From there head on to Rafanelli for a small, family run winery. You need to make an appointment, and bring CASH; they don't accept credit cards. (not sure about checks).

If you still have time (and interest) go to Hop Kiln or closer to town, Seghesio (great old vine Zins).

Do you need dinner recommendations? The Madrona Manor is one of my all time favorites.

www.wineroads.com Has all the info and directions you could want.

Have fun!

I second the Chateau Souverain suggestion. The restaurant is The Alexander Valley Grille. We had the prixd fixe lunch, very good and you will receive a pass for a complimentary tasting with your lunch.

For dinner, we enjoyed The Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg. ***kim***

Make certain you have reservations at Chateau Soverain for lunch now..it seems to be necessary.
