Villa Florence, Savoy or Mosser?

Hello everyone! We are planning our first trip to San Francisco and have narrowed our hotel choices to three; Villa Florence, the Savoy and the Mosser. All have quoted us the same rate. Which one offers the best value and location? Thank you in advance.

Are there any other hotels you are considering? The Villa Florence and Savoy are in Union Square, a rather dirty and not so safe area after dark. Mosser is in the South of Market, which has improved latley, but again would not recommend this area either. You should look into the Wharf area, Cow Hollow, or Marina. If you would rather stay outside of SF, Sausalito is very nice. Many people prefer this option as many find the city of Sf to be rather gritty. Unfortunately the homeless continue to be a big problem.

The room on the Villa Florence site, that I posted below is the JR SUITE--NOT a regular room-

http://www.villaflorence.com/vfhroom/index.html

If you go with the Villa FLorence, make sure you ask for a room facing the INNER COURTYARD.....

The regular rooms are VERY small....Jr Suites are way nicer- and the restaurant in the hotel, Kuleto's , is good Italian--make sure you order the Italian breakfast there- VERY good--
The CABLE car runs right in front of this hotel.

The Savoy is a little too far removed from Union Sq- but smack in the middle of the theater district- GET on your
walking shoes...

The Mosser looks nice, from the website-but the room pix make the room look small-- and I do not normally like to stay BELOW Market street as the area is "iffy"...even tho they are renovating everything now....

So........my choice would be the Villa Florence-JR SUITE only.....

we stayed at villa florence, and we were not that impressed. The location was good, and the rates were low($85). But the first room we were in was facing the street and the quality of the room was very poor. - The AC was broken and the the walls were all banged up. After complaining twice, we finally got moved to a courtyard room, which was nicer and bigger(also quieter). I never stayed at the Savoy.

Next time we go to SF I want to try to stay at Hotel Monaco or Hotel Nikko

I also don't understand why Cali_native would say that Union Square is unsafe?? I never felt that way there at all. I was really glad that we stayed in Union Square as opposed to the warf area beacuse of the central location. Also many good resturants are in the area, cabs are plentiful, and my wife got to do lots of shopping. There are alot of homeless people and beggars - but that is typical anywhere in SF. (or many other big cities in CA)

We just stayed at the Villa Florence. What a colorful San Francisco experience! We got a small front room. The ding-ding-ding of the trolley right outside our window. The coming and goings of the tourists and the drunks. Better then a evening at the theatre. The first night I was horrified, but they were full. No rooms for us to move into. Then I got my ear plugs (always come prepared)and we settled in. The tranportation was a breeze, I never felt unsafe, the homeless have to be somewhere. No one hasseled us. But catching a trolley right out side the hotel door was wonderful. Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Wharf all just a short ride away. Spent 3 nights listening to the life and pulse of the city. Yes, a generic stay in a Hyatt or Westin can be nice. But I came away feeling like I had experienced the city, in all of its wonderful gritty crowded glory.

we stayed at the Villa Florence. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

As far as it not being safe, I would disagree. We came and went at 12 and 1 am and had no problems.

Ask for a selection of rooms when you get there. They let us choose our room. Not a great view but a nice room. As an added bonus, they have Aveda ammenities in the room, shampoo, lotion, etc.

Albert was the concierge that helped us with all our arrangements and was superior. I can give you more details if you want them.

Stay at Villa Florence. The money you save will be appreciated as SF is expensive. It was one of the best vac. we have had.

Not sure which hotel is better but I agree with other poster that you should not be afraid to stay in Union Sq. Apparently there are some regular Union Square bashers but most people say the area is fine. Let us know how you liked your hotel.. I might be going to SFO in Sept... was thinking of staying at Sir Francis Drake in Union Square so I'll be curious about your experience.

As a native San Franciscan, my advice would be to not stay in Union Square if at all possible. It has become quite a marginal area in recent years. Many of the hotels, restaurants, and other establishments have been losing business as a result.

Stayed at the Villa Florence last fall and agree that the Union Square area is not very attractive any more. Next time I would try to stay in Russian Hill or another nice neighborhood area. We did enjoy Villa Florence. We received a free upgrade to a junior suite that faced the inner courtyard. The restaurant, bar, and lobby areas are quite nice and they offer complimentary wine and beer every afternoon. I wouldn't call it a top-notch luxury hotel by any means but we felt it was a good value. I believe we paid $99 a night.

We just spent 2 nights at the Villa Florence and were delighted! Perfect location for touring the city and we enjoyed the complementary wine each evening. Walk up the block to Sears Fine Foods for a great breakfast! Have fun!
