Video tapes & airport security

Can airport security machines damage video tapes (ie movies, NOT the type for the camcorder)? Should they be placed in checked luggage or in carry-on hand luggage? Thanks.

Yes, the scanners can definitely damage your videotapes. Carry them on your person (or carry-on), but ask the inspectors to hand-inspect them, rather than sending them through the scanner. It's a common thing.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I don't think Todd is correct. Surely, there must at one expert out there who can answer with authority.

I can't imagine they would not insist on a video not going through the belt. Use to let you walk film threw but that has probably changed too
