Victoria BC Early May
I'm going to be in Victoria, BC for four days (three nights) in May. I've been reading about The Gatsby Manor - anyone know anything about it. They have some good "packages" that seem very reasonable. Would appreciate any info on the Manor, restaurants, or Victoria in general. Thanks!

As a resident of Victoria (20+yrs) I had to look up the hotel's address in the phone book since it is not a "familiar" name. However, the address is on Belleville Street. This is a central location close to the " Inner Harbour", the Provincial Legislature, and many of Victoria's tourist attractions.

I don't live in Victoria but love to go for long
weekends. I think the best food is at the Blethering Place. It's very English but then that's what Victorias all about. Take the little harbour ferry tour, the little boats are too cute to miss. Great to walk the inner harbour at night it's beautiful. Don't miss the little tour of the Parliament Bldg and of course a stoll through the Empress Hotel. Butchart Gardens are worth a look and the double-decker bus tour of the city is also very nice. It's a real walking city and keep an eye out for Rogers chocolate shop and be sure and treat yourself. May might also be good whale spotting season. Inside the Empress there is a tour company and they can let you know if the season is right. We didn't see any whales but lots of sea lions. I know you'll have a terrific time. |
Victoria is a very civilized place. We stayed at Elk Lake B and B. Nice.
The BC Museum close to the inner harbor is very interesting. The best feature, for us, was Butchart Gardens. Absolutely beautiful. I am not much of a garden gazer, but I liked that one. |
I spend October ever year in Victoria and it's the best. You can walk or take a bus anyplace plus the tourist office on the harbor is great for info, it's across from the Emperess. If you get a good deal at the Gatsb the location is perfect and what a great city to walk in you will love it. May will be a good time, beat the rush.

Welcome to Victoria! I was born and raised in this beautiful city, and really hope you have a wonderful time here in May. If I think I know the Gatsby, it should be nice. The location is great, as it's close to the harbour and many of the local attractions, shopping etc. If you're renting a car, there's a nice drive around the waterfront that's nearby. Otherwise there's many tour buses as well. May is a great time of year, as it's not as busy as the summer season, and the weather is usually nice. If you're coming during the week of May 17 - 24th, then you're in luck! May 18th is Victoria Day (Queen Victoria's birthday) and is a long weekend for Canadians. There's a parade and special events. Also, on May 23rd, there's it's our Swiftsure weekend - quite a large sailboat race with 200+ entries. The boats range from small (20') to large (100'+). The start is Saturday morning, and they usually cross the finish line early Sunday morning (for the large boats) and all through Sunday. I believe during the week there will be special events happening this year. Anyways, hope you have a great trip here! If you need any more info, contact me via email. Sharon

Hi,
I also live in Victoria and right now the weather is fabulous. Was wandering around in my shorts and t-shirt all day. But be warned to pack an umbrella since we are well known for showery days. Some places to eat while you are here is Dillitantes on Fort street, the Cheesecake Cafe and Murchies for dessert. As people have told you, the inner harbour is beautiful at night, and it is fun to wander down on the docks if there are a lot of boats in. If you are lucky, the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit at the museum may be here when you come, although I am not sure of the exact date. Other good places to go is Butchart Gardens by double decker bus, the Empress hotel just to have a look around and Craigdarroch Castle if you are interested in seeing a turn of the century small castle built for a famous family in Victoria. If you don't mind spending a little more money for dinner and it is just the two of you, then I highly recommend Il Terrazo for dinner. Last time I was there (it has been awhile) entrees ran about $10.00 to about 18.00. Shouldn't be too bad for you with the exchange rate. If you do go, book ahead and ask to sit outside on the patio near a fireplace. They have great woodoven pizzas and other italian foods as well as wonderful desserts. Hope you enjoy your trip here. |
