Vertigo

I know that this has nothing to do with traveling but has anyone ever heard of VERTIGO? Or know anyone w/it. ossible cures or meds to try. Dizziness, pain in your head, nausea, can't move untill it goes away, feels like your on a merry go round. Can anyone give me some references on who to consult about it.

seetheworld Sep 7th, 2006 02:53 PM

Sigh. See an ENT. They will test you (a very unpleasant test) to see where the imbalance is. Unfortunately this happens with age and it is awful.

Somebody had it after a cruise or a trip. If you can't find those posts, just wait, people will advise.

Consult your doctor.

Absolutely consult your doctor. There can be many causes and treatment depends on the cause. You can look it up on the internet and learn a lot, but you still won't know the cause in your case, until you see a doctor. You can keep track of what you are doing when you have symptoms and how long it lasts in the meantime. This might be useful to your doctor.

and best of all, go to the "cruises" forum on Fodor's, type in "vertigo" into the search window, and it will pull up LOTS of posts

And THEN go to your doctor. :D

seetheworld Sep 7th, 2006 03:02 PM

Consult your doctor. It can be a process of elimination with a couple of specialists. Best wishes.

Go to your doctor - an ENT if you can get in to see one without a PCP visit first. Don't even attempt driving while this is occuring - even if it's sporadic. They will probably prescribe meclazine for dizziness and phenergan if you are nauseated, too. Tests usually required for diagnoses. Good luck!

Wow, I would run to the doctor for vertigo, not be waiting on us to post. It's hell - like you and the earth are moving at odds to one another.

I have benign positional vertigo [when I sit up or turnover when lying down] that I got almost immediately after I rode a wheeled bobsled at Lake Placid. It lasted a year; I have recurring bouts now but for relatively short periods of time.

Go to the Dr to be sure what it is and see what they recommend. It isn't fun...

Hope this helps...

Sounds like the BPPV (Benign Proxsysimal Positional Vertigo) Version of Vertigo. Been there, done that. Go to a doctor. They will prescribe meds like meclizene (higher dosage dramamine type drug) and possibly physical therapy (to help your body learn to tolerate the symptoms) if meds do not help enough by themselves.

Be sure to go to a decent Ear Nose & Throat specialist, they will know more about this than regular docs. This has been my experience.

This stuff is no fun. Good luck.

Hello. Crystallized ginger works wonders for me now - it helps if you like it. An initial adjustment by my family medicine guy, followed by sitting in a chair for 48 hours which was awful and a series of positional exercises really helped. I know, it sounds like voodoo. Wait until you get to the part about 'ear rocks.' Go on-line - there are different types of vertigo with different treatment plans. Meds were a last resort. I hope that this helps.

seetheworld Sep 7th, 2006 03:41 PM

Determine what is actually causing the dizziness first.

The problem with benign vertigo is that not all treatments work the same for everyone. For some, the positional exercises can actually make it worse. Don't try these things on your own. Get it checked out!

BayouGal Sep 7th, 2006 03:44 PM

Amen - what STW said!

DebitNM Sep 7th, 2006 03:51 PM

I'd nod my head with agreement with all that has been said...but I don't want to start a new bout! :o)

Please see you physician.

Ear problems can also cause the sensation.

Monica_S Sep 7th, 2006 06:13 PM

It's not me...it's my mom (47 yrs old)We do not know what's causing it. She can be doing the simplest things, like watching t.v., more so when she stressed. It started out every now and then (1 a year) now it's every month, and increasing. She saw her PCP and they prescribed her meclazine and phenegran....said it was vertigo and sent her on her way. I was hoping that one of you knew or knows someone else w/it to give some ideas on what to do or where to go. For fear that it is heriditary (i'm 27)...any info helps.

Monica_S Sep 7th, 2006 06:21 PM

Sorry... my mom is 45...she would kill me if she knew I was adding years to her life!!!ha!ha!.

LoveItaly Sep 7th, 2006 06:25 PM

Well Monica, BayouGal is in the medical field so I would follow her advise to see an Ear,Nose and Throat Specialist. Especially since it doesn't sound like her regular physician has helped her much. I truly hope your mother will do that. No one hates going to the doctor more than I do but there are times you just have to. Best wishes to both of you.
