Vermont/New Hampshire
Have 5 days to see Vermont (&/or New Hampshire) in late July needing to arrive in Cabot,Vt. on Friday. Need suggestions on what to see in 5 days, where to fly into/out, etc. Will return to the Northeast in later years so don't want to spend all the time at the wheel. Like viewing nature, small villages, etc. Once went to Maine and did loop from Portland up the coast and loved it. Anything similar would be great.

Hi there -
If you are staying in Cabot, first try looking for flights into Burlington (BTV). It's only about 1.15 hours to Cabot from Burlington. If prices are outrageous, try Manchester, NH (MHT). Probably about 2.5 hours from Cabot.
That said, Cabot is a nice little town. Definetely check out the Cabot Creamery. You can spend a day doing a loop from Cabot, over to MOrrisville, down to Stowe, from Stowe to Montpelier, then back to Cabot.
You can also spend a day doing a loop through the Northeast Kingdom - drive over to St. Johnsbury, north to Lyndonville, then take Route 5 to 5a around Lake Willoughby, then back south to St.Johnsbury. Drive to the top of Burke Mountain in East Burke. Visit Stephen Huneck's Dog Mountain & Dog Chapel in St. Johnsbury.

Cabot Vt is in a very rural part of a very rural state. Just driving around the back roads will present many photo opps for small villages, cows, and mountain vistas. Especially scenic drives are thru the Lincoln Gap in Warren, and Smuggler's Notch above Stowe - I'm sure there are dozens more. For great dining, Montpelier has some surprisingly good restaurants. Of course tourisy towns like Stowe and Woodstock have lots of fun places to eat and shop. For a change of scenery, drive rte 2 over to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The Kancamagus highway is a stretch of wilderness highway that snakes thru the Whites with good places to pull off for a hike or swim. If you are the outdoorsy type, you will love Vt and NH. Vermont is more bucolic while NH is more rugged. You might want to try flying into Burlington Vt and out of Manchester NH.

We have visited northern VT several times in the last 3 years - it is just beautiful! We fly Southwest into Manchester. Do not miss the opportunity to stay at the RABBIT HILL INN in the village of Lower Waterford (about 1/2 hour from Cabot). Fabulous rooms & service - the dining is outstanding. Easy daytripping from this location brings you through the best of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Don't miss a short drive to Franconia Notch State Park (great waterfalls & hike trails). The folks at Rabbit Hill are very helpful with planning terrific day trips (we often take a picnic lunch with us). July is a wonderful time to be in Vermont.

Do you like to hike? Camel's hump between Burlington and Montpelier is great on a clear day. Do you like to kayak/canoe? Green River Reservoir (near Morrisville and not too far from Cabot) is beautiful...no development and no motorboats allowed. Also, the Burlington waterfront can be a nice place to have a picnic or ride the ferry.
