Vermont, NH, and Maine

Instead of a big international trip this year, I am going to see my sister outside of Boston. We will be driving up to Swanlake in Maine to visit other relatives. I thought we would maybe spend a night somewhere between Boston and Swan Lake (near Belfast). Any cute little town you could recommend? We would like to spend maybe $100 a night. Coming back, I`d like to see a little of Vermont. Any cute little towns you could recommend for a day or two? We mainly want to sightsee, shop and eat. Thanks!

Between Boston and Belfast, Portsmouth NH has a nice downtown area and restaurants. I would aim to shop there, have lunch and then get back on the road. Your trip could be a tour of outlet malls. Right across the river from Portsmouth is Kittery ME outlet malls. Head to Portland for dinner and an overnight. Portland also has a fun shopping area near the water. There is also Freeport ME outlet shopping. On way to family, stop in Camden ME for more shopping. It's a small town but probably the most picturesque on the Maine coast.

From Swan Lake, aim for N Conway NH, another area of outlet malls. Drive south to Center Sandwich NH just because it's probably one of the prettiest small towns. Hardly any stores but the Corner House Tavern is good place to eat if they are open for lunch. Otherwise, there's a small deli type place across the road with good food. Lake Winnipesaukee is only a few miles away. Downtown Meredith is very cute with a few fun shops.

We stayed in Quechee VT last fall. The motel had very large rooms. I think it was the Quality Inn. Looks like their rates mid June are $100 so you will have to look around for something cheaper. Nearby Woodstock is one of the most popular tourist towns in VT. From there you can go south. Visit Vermont Country Store and other towns. Are you heading back to Boston? I think the Quechee area might be overpriced and except for Simon Pierce, our dining experiences were pretty poor.
